256mb module in Inspiron/Latitude - EDO msg?

Have this weird problem with a 256mb memory module
that I'm trying to put into my neighbor's Inspiron 4000.
It has a metal sleeve around the chips,
but that's not the problem as mentioned at the bottom...

If I leave the existing 64mb module in the laptop,
the BIOS thinks it has found EDO memory and shuts down.
"EDO memory detected in socket 0"....
Even tried swapping the slots - same result & same socket 0 message ?

Also - tried swapping with other 256mb modules, and a Dell C600 laptop,
and they all work - but only alone,
not with other 64mb or 256mb modules in the other slots.

This 256mb module only works by itself - will not work with other
modules.

Any ideas ?

modules are manufactured by Infineon which is one of the leading brands.

they need to work alone or in equal pairs.
that is my guess, because you didnt say which model you have.

huh - tried in the Dell Inspiron 4000 and a Dell Latitude C600
both work fine with mixed pair of varying sizes & combos, (64mb & 256mb)
but neither with work when mixed with this specific 256mb module.

what are the identifying numbers on the 256mb chip?
cant help for sure without it.
if there are no numbers, then you got sold a bill of goods.

it could be ECC memory, or registered memory, or high density, or low
density and wont work if not matched properly.

Boot it up with only the "funny" module. Run Everest to get the model
number. Post it here.

It IS possible that the one or more of the modules is both EDO and
pc100. There is such a thing. (rare)

tnx for the posting and Everest - had not not run across that utility -
it's great -
http://www.lavalys.com/products/over...?pid=3&lang=en

well - the mystery continues -
Everest reported the other modules via the / Motherboard / SPD / command
BTW - it only reports on a single module, even if 2 are installed.

But the mystery module yielded nothing - just a blank screen -
Anyway... thanks again for the education...
Wrapped the module up and sent it back.

Looks like I also encountered a Dell vs Everest situation.
Wish I had played just a little bit more
to find out about the mystery module before I sent it back.
More and more it seems like it must have been an EDO module
in that it would not play nice with the SDRAM modules,
and that the Dell BIOS complained that it found an EDO module.

---> snip'd from the Everest forum posting <--

I was having some probs with our Dell laptops and a new memory module.
Someone suggested Everest - so I downloaded it today... GREAT program.
But - the SPD info does not always show up ?
With two 144pin SODIMM memory slots inside the laptop,
when the SPD info does display, it only reports on slot #2 ?

I was doing some head scratching, as when the single mystery module
was placed into slot #1 - nothing showed in SPD.
If the single module is in slot #1 - then nothing shows in Everest SPD.
If both slots are filled, then again, only slot #2 is reported for SPD.
Tried with different size modules to see if that would force a display -
nope.
Dell Inspiron 4000 - PC100
Dell Latitude C600 - PC100
Dell Latitude (x2) C610 - PC133

Any ideas on what would cause it to not display for slot #1, but only
slot #2 ?
BTW - what is SPD ?

---> reply

SPD = Serial Presence Detect. It's a way of connecting memory modules
to the SMBus of the motherboard to let applications read out memory
module hardware default configuration like memory timings, product name,
serial number, etc.

Maybe your Dell systems only have slot#2 connected to the SMBus, and
slot#1 is not. You may want to check it with other tools too, like CPU-Z
or HWiNFO32.

---> followup -
BTW - just downloaded and tried CPU-Z and it reports the same thing -
only 1 slot of memory when physically 2 are installed.

Is that a recommendation based on experience?

I'm having a strange encounter with AtomicPark.com, LLC.

Today I went to their web site for the first time

http://downloads.atomicpark.com/

to buy this program

TextAloud MP3

They instantly charged my bank account $25, transferred/sent
an old trial version 1.479 of TextAloud MP3 to me, and then told me
the activation code is "Not Available".

Maybe it's just sloppy business, but I seriously don't like being
jacked around by online merchants.

The problem was corrected after I wrote to Nextup.com.

AtomicPark legitimately distributes software for the publisher, but
apparently there is (or was) some disconnect between their servers.
