My computer literate friend says that very very soon 3.5 inch floppy
drives will not be an option on new desktop PC's. That a purchaser
will no longer be able to buy a PC with a floppy drive.

Any validity to his opinion?

They've been obsolete for a decade. But... you'll still get one if you
ask for one.

it is already the case with most pre-built machines. but it is a incomplete
thought. what your friend didn't say or doesn't know is that usb type
external 3.5" floppy drives are readily available. and the drivers load
automatically by windows xp machines. so even computers that are not
equipped with an internal 3.5" floppy can easily read/write to one with a
external usb 3.5" floppy drive.

Yes. Since most people have USB keys, the need for a floppy
drive has decreased dramatically. How much software is shipped
on 3.5" drives these days? None that I know of. If you have important
data on floppies, now's a good time to copy it to CDs or DVDs.

That's a relief! I wish that there were also a USB 5 1/4" floppy drive.
I've got some stuff archived on that medium and it appears now that it
will have to *remain* archived.

I have both sizes of floppy drive on my system and would transfer the data
to DVDs for you for just the cost of shipping + $1.00 per DVD used
(my cost). If you're interested, send me an email.
