You need to deinstall the printer and start over for both the parallel
and USB installations. I do no know this printer, but in general, the
parallel problems might be 1. incorrect port type (ECC, EPP, bi-di),
incorrect printer driver (PCL vs something else), a conflict with
another driver.

For the USB, this is typical of a failed driver install. Boot to safe
mode and remove from device manager every instance of multiple devices
(printer or not), the printer itself, and any printer-related software
in Add/Remove programs. Pay particular attention to the existence of
multiple instances of ports in device manager. Shut down and disconnect
the printer. Reboot and let Windows redetect and reinstall the devices
you have removed previously in safe mode.

For a USB installation, the printer driver(s) should be installed before
the printer is connected the first time, however this is accomplished
with this printer. For the parallel installation, verify what exact
procedure is required. Check Google, Google Groups and HP support for
the appropriate driver type to use with Win9x. Also verify that Win98
does not have a parallel port driver available for the printer. If so,
use that driver instead of the HP driver on the installation CD to test
the parallel installation.

I am trying to install an HP 3820 printer on my father's PC. Running
Win 98 SE.

When using the printer on the parallel port, it regularly spews out
paper, stops, prints vertically etc. I have had exactly the same
trouble on a different machine using an HP690C printer.

I tried to install onto the USB port. The install programme on the CD
would not recognise the printer, repeatedly. Then I let Windows run
through automatically when iyt found new hardware, and because the
drivers had been extracted and were on drive C:, it prooceeded to load
the printer. The printer then worked, until I had a call a few days
later from my old man saying it was not working again.

I have installed his printer on my USB ports no worries. So I thought
maybe it was the USB on his PC. So I installed my USB scanner on his
machine. No worries, twice.

I downloaded the latest drivers for the 3820. WHen I tried to run the
install programme, on either machine, with or without the printer
connected, it simply came up saying "Loading...10%", sat there for 5
seconds and disappeared. AFAICS nothing had happened. I downloaded
again with the same result.

I have contected HP who got me to download (against my protests) the
XP/2000 version. It did exactly the same thing.

Does anyone have any helful hints, please?

Windows hardware management for new devices is flawed for USB devices,
particularly in WinXP. By installing the drivers prior to connecting
the device, you make certain that the correct driver is available when
the hardware manager sees the device for the first time. If you plug in
a USB device that has no driver, Windows sometimes (and XP all the time)
associates "something" with that device while the driver selection is
being done. That "something" is quite often not the device you want to
have associated, and correcting it is often not easily accomplished.

For parallel devices, using the HP installation without having a device
connected is often not possible, but if you have just the driver files,
those can often be installed separately, making the selection of the
correct driver a no brainer with the add-hardware wizard. This has the
added benefit of preventing the installation of the usual HP startup
apps, etc., that have little if any benefit for printing and are memory
hogs.

For XP installations this is a good site (run by an MS-MVP):

It seems strange to me that a parallel port that works fine with an
older Hp, and an Epson C61 (quite new) willstruggle with two newer HP
models.

A question, if I may. Why do the driver shave to be installed with the
printer disconnected? I am actually not sure this will work with these
latest drivers, as I have tried on my machine, which does not have the
printer installed.

Ok. Thanks for the help. Still puzzled really. I have a USB scanner,
an Epson printer, and a USB camera. None of them have given me _any_
trouble. I am emailing HP and getting _very_ generic "help". They are
trying to get me to download NT OS updates now! (I am using Win 98)
