486 on the Hubble

I see that the Hubble uses the mighty i80486 for a CPU, I wonder if this
was some mil spec, rad hard, super gee-whiz version or the standard CPU.
Powered off for 19 years and came up, I'm impressed.

The next set of processors might well be off-the-shelf AMD processors,
as they use SOI technology in their manufacture. SOI was originally
designed for aerospace industry to guard against the extra radiation
that occurs at high altitudes.
