Hello all, I hope I'm explaining this correctly, I know you can upgrade the
8k7a to a 2400 chip by flashing the bios and leaving the jumpers to default,
but heres my question.

I was running version 1.1 bios and my AMD 1.0 gig died ( code FF ) , So I
ordered an AMD 2400 chip. Now I'm getting an error 29 ( I Believe ) and the
cpu fan won't run. So my problem is, since the system won't boot far enough
to flash the bios, what are my options besides fining a chip around a gig to
use until the bios is flashed?

It might be your Video card (AGP) not seated properly but more seriously
if your CPU fan isn't spinning, you need to find out why and fix it since
that
may be the reason your 1.0 GHz died!

The fan works when I insert the dead AMD, I installed the video card a few
times. Thanks for responding.

FFh means boot attempt. After that FF code, I assume, the boot doesn't
proceed. I see no reason to think that your CPU is dead.

Do you see on the screen the POST (memory check and the table with
system components)?

If yes, then, my advice is to put back the old CPU and look for some
other fault.

1st I got the FF code so I found 2 used boards from ebay for 35 dollars, I
replaced the board and still got the FF error, I read you can upgrade to a
AMD 2400, I got for around 50 bucks and installed it, no more FF , it
starts the cycle of codes then stops at error 29 ( unless I'm looking at it
upside down, then it's a 92 I guess.)

I'm still asking around for a AND gig or so chip to borrow for a few hours
but haven't found one yet. I'm not a computer expert but seem to be the one
everyone turns to for answers. Thanks for everyones help, if you have any
other ideas let me know. Thanks again

You can try clearing the CMOS by pulling the jumper 1 (JP1) from pins 1 and
2 to pins 2 and 3. JP1 is by the bottom of the board as installed in the
case a bit to the left of the LED post-code display. I did this before
upgrading to an XP2400+ last November.

XP2400+ will work with board revision 1.1 and might work with revision 1.0.
Revision number is listed between a pair of PCI slots. Bios flash not
necessary unless you do not want to have the cpu identified as an 'unknown
cpu' on startup. My board worked fine before flashing the bios.

Hook the cpu fan up to a power supply cable directly if the fan is a high
flow unit- it can burn out the motherboard fan header if a high speed fan is
connected to the motherboard.

Check the 5 volt rail to see what it reads. If is below 4.75 it could be
power supply realted. PC Health status reports this info if you can get that
far, or into the Bios screens (original board bios may not have this
feature, mine did not- board was bought September of 2001).

Error code 29 has to do with the initialization of the cpu and CMOS. You may
also try re-seating the memory.

8K7A boards have a known issue with capacitors deteriorating with age. Check
for brown colored powder on tops of all capacitors and for any top or side
bulging. Bad capacitors will lead to a dead board which can be rma'ed to
Epox. They can replace the capacitors that are bad.

Good luck!

Dave
