Hi group,
I'm working on a ASUS A8N 32 SLI deluxe workstation equipped with an AMD
athlon 64 X2 4400+, 2 GB RAM (Corsair) and 4 SATA HDD (3 in RAID5, 1 boot
drive), in a large case (a Cooler master stacker 830) with 2 additional
(side) fans. No overclock, that's a production machine. All works fine, but
some days ago the probe has started popping up often, telling me that the
"motherboard" temperature is about 45 C. Usually the probe reads about 45 C
for CPU and 43-44 for mobo, but often it reads up to 45 for the latter. I
tried to update the BIOS to its latest release and use other monitoring
tools, which give me the same readings (and 38 C for the HD). The cooling
fans stay at ~1160 (power) and ~1300 rpm ("fan3"). Should I worry about this
45 C reading for the "motherboard" or is it simply a sensor placement or
software-related issue?

Thanx in advance!

Dan:

You did not state your room (ambient) temp. My MB runs at about 14.5
C above ambient. My CPU is about 11.5 above ambient.

For example, my ambient temp right now is 26.5C. My MB is at 41C and
my CPU is at 38C.

I have two side fans and my cooling setup is quite good. All above is
at idle.

I get around 45 degrees C for the motherboard temp on my A8N32-SLI.
I have no idea where the MB probe is located, but it is probably near
the "pseudo-northbridge" or the power regulators.

45 degrees C is not high. Commercial ( non-military) silicon devices
are rated for up to 70 degrees C normal operating temperature and
some parts such as video GPUs and processors have internal throttle/
shut-down mechanisms should the temperature significantly exceed
this value.

Far more important to keep an eye on your CPU temp and the temp of
your video card ---- which BTW will happily soar to 70 degrees C in
the midst of a 3D game. True for all the high-end video cards from
both nVIDIA and ATi. In fact, in order for the video card fans to run
as silent as possible, the internal temp sensor that controls the
speed of the video card fan is normally set to not increase the speed
of the fan from a low threshold speed until the GPU temperature
exceeds 65 degrees C or so.

Don't worry, be happy.

Apropos of nothing in particular, I find it curious that your fan cooled
chipset runs hotter than my passively cooled (A8N-SLI Premium). Mine runs
about 10C above case temp and right now is around 35C. I'm just wondering
why the A8N32-SLI chipset would run hotter. I wouldn't have thought there'd
be much difference.

The A8N32-SLI has a heat-pipe, no fan.

Do you know EXACTLY where the MB temperature probe on the A8N-SLI
Premium is sited... oh, I guess not....

35 degrees or 45 degrees makes zippo difference to reliability. Start
thinking about reliability whenever/wherever the temperature exceeds
65 degrees C. And start worrying when it exceeds 75 degrees C.

You're right. This question has been asked dozens of times in many
forums, but, even on the Asus forum, I've never seen a definitive
answer. Therefore, these two users may be comparing apples and
oranges here.
