89 watt or 110 watt? Asus says it makes a difference.

Yep.

Are you running server 2003 64 bit or 32 bit? did you get the
appropriate chipset driver they're different fot 64/32 bit?

Did you install the chipset driver before you updated the bios as per
the ASUS warnings?

Have you tried removeing your browser software then installing the
latest version?

Gotta answer previous questions before I can answer the last.

The latest chipset drivers are available from here:

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Select "Platform / nForce Drivers" --> "nForce4 Series AMD" --> whatever
Windows OS flavor you are running --> then click on the Go! button and then
select a Download Site. Click on the Accept button on the License agreement
page and save the file to your hard disk drive.

I looked through several hundred old posts, didn't see anything to help.

I have the a8n sli delux, phoenix bios v 1004, and I put a dual core
4400 in it. Ran just fine, but does not show up as a dual core.

I need to update the bios, but for most of them I need to update the
chipset drivers.

And when I do that (Chipset_Win2K3_V666.zip) I reboot, and then Every
browser I start up crashes to blue screen, requiring I re-clone the
system disk to eliminate that.

The asus site is a nightmare for me. I try turning off my security, but
all that @#$$! webcode is a major mess, much of it doesn't work. I
don't know if it would be any good if I could navigate it, since their
language skills leave so much to be desired.

What bios do I actually need to have this system see my 4400 as a dual
core, and what chipset? Can anyone get me direct links to the files on
asus site?

I be eternally thankful, yes.

On the top of the processor is a code number.

http://www.amdcompare.com/images/us-en/chart_r2.gif explains it

That means taking off the heatsink and removing the HS paste if you
don't have that written down somewhere. Possibly in the order
information or the manual that came with the processor.

This chart:

http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...?SLanguage=en-
us&model=A8N-SLI%20Deluxe

says the different wattage processors require differetnt mimimum
level bios.

Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ revE6(110W Socket939) ALL 1010

Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ revE6(89W Socket939) ALL 1015.005

Your use of "And when I do that (Chipset_Win2K3_V666.zip) I reboot,"
confused me. You want " Win2K Version V6.66 2005/07/26 update
Description nVidia Chipset(CK804) driver version V6.66 for Windows
2000/2003. To avoid crashing file system, please do update the chipset
driver before updating Bios version 1012 or later "

From the ASUS Download Page:

http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

" All OS

Version 1016 2005/12/21 update
Description A8N-SLI Deluxe Bios version 1016
Please do read the description before updating BIOS
To avoid crashing file system, please do update the chipset driver to
below version prior to this Bios.
For WinXP 32bit system, please download and update chipset drivers V6.65
or later
For WinXP 64bit system, please download and update chipset drivers V6.65
or later
For Win2k/2003 32bit system, please download and update chipset drivers
V6.66 or later
For Win2003 64bit system, please download and update chipset drivers
V6.66 or later
1- Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at:
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx
2- Update awdflash.exe to v1.14 ---------- Did you use this?
3- Remove 2.88MB floppy item value ------Did you do this?
File Size 453.4 (KBytes)
Download from Global USA Europe China Japan "

So the latast Bios you want to run is 1016 < anything newer is a beta
bios >

"Win2K

Version V6.66 2005/07/26 update
Description nVidia Chipset(CK804) driver version V6.66 for Windows
2000/2003.
To avoid crashing file system, please do update the chipset driver
before updating Bios version 1012 or later
File Size 32.21 (MBytes)
Download from Global USA Europe China Japan"

is the chipset driver you need to update before updating the bios.

If it's not working you may have to use a single core processor to do
the updates before you put in the dual core processor.

I'm not running server at all, this is win2k pro sp4, with a lot more
updates after that.

This happens with Any browser-like software, including the AsusUpdater.
It's not the browser.

Well there you have it. How do I find out about 89 vs 110 watt, and
where does asus say anything about that?

Thanks.

This would give the whole list.
http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/Default.aspx

Your ADA4000DKA5CF processor is an 89W E6 stepping S939 *single core* :

Probably have to contact ASUS then.

Have you tried using the ASUS Update program and upgrading from within
windows?

I could try e-mailing you the files. It looks like Awardflash.exe 1.17
may have superceded 1.14.

The files would have to be used from a bootable dos diskette.

Where do you get that from there? Or anywhere else?

The listing on amdcompare, is for an Athlon64, not an Athlon64 X2.
An X2 is dual core. Your processor is more like one of these, a single
core processor.

Click the specification tab here. The part number is ADA4000DKA5CF
and the single core processor is worth exactly $62.50. It is an
OEM part and comes with no cooler. So what did the retailer tell you
it was ?
