I could not get the onboard sound to work on my A8N32-SLI. So, I
bought a cheap SoundBlaster card (Audigy) and I now have sound.
However, I am rather curious as to why no sound with the on-board
module. I tried both TV speakers and a set of external speakers. I
tried two different cables. I completely installed the Realtek
software. I checked all settings in Control Panel. I did not have mute
selected but did have volume set to near maximum. I was using the
correct jack (lime green). All looked good in Device Manager with no
yellow alerts. In the BIOS I had the sound module set on Auto. I could
not even get the standard wave files for Windows to test out. Since I
now have sound working via the Audigy card and the TV speakers, it is
not critical that I get the on-board sound to function but I am really
curios as to why I was having this problem. Any ideas??

In this picture, do you see the two blue jumpers in the upper left corner ?
They're on the FP_AUDIO header.

http://www.ixbt.com/mainboard/asus/a...luxe/board.jpg

If you aren't using front panel audio wiring, the two blue jumpers should
be put in place. The manual shows which pins to put them on. They are
continuity jumpers, connecting the returned signals from the front audio,
to the back (green) Lineout jack.

If you are using front panel wiring, it is the responsibility of the
front panel wiring, to "continue" the connection that the jumpers
would have done.

The reason for this feature, is so that front panel jacks can "mute"
the rear Lineout when you use headphones via the front.

But if the jumpers are missing, it is muted all the time :-)

What I tell people, who've installed some kind of front panel wiring is:

1) Remove the wiring from the FP_AUDIO header.
2) Put the two jumpers back.
3) Verify the green connector on the back of the computer works.
4) Figure out why the case front panel wiring is busted.

And if that's not it, I'll mention that on my A8N-SLI Premium, I
couldn't get onboard audio working with the Realtek drivers when the
board was new in 2005. Mysteriously, I had to install the nVidia
nForce-4 audio drivers to get sound. I never knew why that was, and
since then, I've upgraded the audio drivers to the latest Realtek ones
without losing audio.

Paul: As usual you are correct. No jumpers on that header. I shall
take care of the problem later on today. I really need the PCI slot
that is being used by the Audigy card. Thanks also to Ron. If there
are any problems after replacing the jumpers, I shall play with the
drivers as suggested.

It worked perfectly. I took the Audigy out, installed the two jumpers
and turned it on. I did not remove the Audigy drivers nor did I
re-install the Realtek drivers. I guess that XP has a basic set of
drivers which is all I need.

Thanks again.
