I know I'll be told to read the manual, I did and it is not explicit, tells
me I got four slots and that's about it. Have two identical (same
manufacturer, etc) 512mb, put 1 in the A1 slot and the other in the B1 slot
(they are both blue color, the other A2 and B2 slots are brown). I this
this is right to take advantage of DDR. Is there anyway to know if DDR is
working?

You did it correctly. And, no, there is no way to confirm.

Thanks for your reply, may I ask another question. In the A2 and B2 slots I
put in leftover DDR ram that I had, one is a 512 and the other is a 256 and
they are not the same speed. The computer does recognize that I now have
1.75GB installed and everything is working ok. Does this however negate the
2 sticks I have in A1 and B1 working as dual channel or do they still work
as DDR, while the memory in A2 and B2 is just doing single channel.

You can verify the effects of the various memory configurations, either
by using a Windows utility that has a memory bandwidth tester (Sisoftware
Sandra or Everest), or use a free tool like memtest86+ from memtest.org .
Memtest86+ has a bandwidth indicator in the upper left hand corner
of the screen.

Placing a random collection of DIMMs in a Socket 939 board, results in
"single channel" operation. And the memtest86+ test results should reflect
the slower operating speed.

Two pairs of matched sticks, like 2x512MB + 2x1024MB, placed in the
appropriate sockets, would continue to give you dual channel operation.
Or using just a single matched pair, like 2x512MB in slots of the same
color, should also give you dual channel operation. Testing with
memtest86+ as a boot floppy or as a boot CD, will tell you the mode you
are in, via a higher or lower bandwidth readout. Testing with a single
stick of RAM, will definitely put you in single channel mode, if you
need a "reference" configuration to get a single channel memory bandwidth
number.

A1 & B1 (blue) are a matched pair of dual channel slots.
A2 & B2 (black) are a matched pair of dual channel slots.
According to the manual.
