a8v: XP won't let me uninstall promise RAID driver

Hi, I recently had to reinstall Windows XP on my Asus A8v deluxe, and I
realized something before it was too late.

I have three hard drives, two on Via (not RAID), and one on Promise (in
IDE Mode).

In BIOS, Promise is configured in IDE Mode (not RAID). It was in IDE
mode for the previous install. This time it is still in IDE Mode.
Nothing has changed.

When installing XP and prompted for SCSI drivers, I put in the floppy
for the Via drivers but not the Promise drivers (for some reason the
install CD would only accept 1 set of SCSI drivers via floppy.

So I installed XP. Next I went to Device Manager. I see RAID Controller
with a Red X. I chose Update Driver and directed the wizard to the
Promise drivers on my floppy.

And there is where I made my mistake. Apparently, the drivers for RAID
mode are different from the Promise drivers for IDE mode. And I
mistakenly put the RAID mode drivers on the floppy.

So it found the drivers and then reported a problem in device manager
(Couldn't be properly installed).

After googling, I found that there were two different kinds of drivers
( 378ata_100104528.zip for ATA use and
378raid_100137.zip for RAID use. ) (see
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.c...b07f20e8cbf6b1
)
, downloaded the one for IDE mode, and tried to steer the wizard
towards it.

Alas, there's a problem! XP still thinks it's a PRomise RAID
controller. Nothing I do tells it to forget the prior install of the
RAID driver. Here's what I've done to refresh/uninstall:

1)remove the device, scan for new devices (if I let it automatically do
its searching, it will "remember that it was WinXP Promise FastTrak 378
controller, and then show an error).

2)remove the two driver files mentioned in the Driver Details tab. Even
when I direct XP to where my unzipped IDE mode drivers are, it will
still ask me for RAID drivers on floppy.

3)remove everything, rescan, Install from list or specific location,
Don't Search/I will choose the driver, Select the driver, next,Uncheck
compatible software:
shows three options:
PROMISE: WinXP Promise FastTrak 378, WinXP Promise FastTrak 376,
Promise Technology Ultra IDE Controller.

So what are my options?

1. Is it possible to move the SATA drive to an IDE controller? (How?)
2. I have data on this drive, so I don't want to lose anything.
3. Is there a cleaner way to remove the driver and/or add hardware?

I'm lost and incredibly confused.

Thanks for any suggestions.
