A960 All-in-one scanner compression

Hi,

My A960 all-in-one continues to print fine, but scanning & copying now
only yield 1/4 of the scanner's 8.5x11 range.

This unit worked fine until a few months ago, and printing continues to

work fine.

Now, though, when I scan or copy I only get approximately 1/4th of the
original image. If the machine is in front of me on the desktop in
normal orientation (i.e., with buttons & screen in front of me), the
quadrant that I get is on the left side. I believe (but am not
certain)
that the quadrant that I get is on the half farther away from me.

I.e., it looks like this:

XXXXXOOOOO
XXXXXOOOOO
XXXXXOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOO

Where X's are the scanned portion the image and O's are unscanned
portions.

I believe (but am not certain) that the scanning mechanism is only
moving halfway across the image horizontally, and then returns to its
starting point.

I would be glad to just throw this away and buy a new one, but I have a
lot of Dell's wonderful stockpiled ink sitting around ...

Thanks for any help ...

Jonathan

As usual, more information would be helpful.

Are you scanning using only one application, or have you scanned using
more applications - i.e. have you identified that it is not an
application-related problem.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your scanner drivers?

You say that you aren't certain that the scanning mechanism is moving
halfway. Why aren't you certain?

Here is what I would do, YMMV,

- Scan using more than just one application -- use Acrobat, or
Photoshop, or Paperport, or Omnipage, or even Word and see if the
problem shows up and it's not an app problem.

- I'd go into Control Panel | System and look at the devices and see
if the scanner has a yellow exclamation point.

- I'd uninstall then reinstall the driver.

Others here could probably provide better steps, but those, in a
nutshell, are the types of things that I do to fix problems.

Er ... it's simpler than that, because the same issue exists when
photocopying, even when the computer is off. So this can be detached
from driver issues .. there's some sort of hardware issue or internal
software issue within the printer. Because of this, I suspect that
it's not easily resolved, unless some of you are real wizards on this
printer and/or similar gizmos. One idea that comes to mind now (hadn't
occurred to me earlier) is I wonder if there's a way to reset the
printer's firmware & settings to factory defaults.

Because I hadn't double-checked it when I posted ... now I have. Sorry
about this.

Thanks for your post, and thanks for any more suggestions.

You've probably already checked this, but is there any chance the the
scanner was inadvertantly set to do this?

Maybe with a paper size or output size setting. My scanner does exactly what
yours is doing if I have zoom set to 200%.

Inadvertantly set to do this because I have a 3-year-old running around
the house causing mayhem, you mean? :-)

Mike, your statement that you could reproduce this was very helpful ...
thanks.

I restored the factory settings and all seems to be OK now. Let's hear
it for Dell support who told me it was broken and needed to be
replaced, given the exact same written description as I provided here.
