Abit AN7 Quake III Lock Up Issue

Howdy All!

Just installed the new Abit AN7 (Bios 13 - Purchased from New Egg):

AMD Barton 2500+ (Auto on the CPU/FSB Setting which is 333Mhz)
1 stick 512 MB Crucial PC3200 (slot 1 - memory timings By SPD)
Chaintech Nvidia Ti4600 128 MB Video Card (Nvidia 5303 Drivers)
Windows XP SP1 (Fresh Install of everything)
Nforce 3.13 Drivers Installed
DirectX 9.0b

Have been running the motherboard for a few days now, and the board
runs perfectly with any Windows application. In addition, I can
play any DirectX game for hours, nary a hiccup (UT2003, UT, etc. ).

If I try to play Quake III 1.32g (640 X 480 32bit Textures 32 bit
Color Depth) for about a couple of minutes before the system simply
locks up solid. If I reboot and try with lower textures & color
depth or even the basic settings, no luck. Hell, I can simply
launch the game, run a Single Player game, and leave myself as a
spectator, and the machine will still lock up!

Wiped out and re-installed Quake III, no luck. Adjusted the memory
timings, to Abits OPTIMAL, same thing. I have yet to wipe out the
OS and re-install, but am quite puzzled on why only the OpenGL games
have issues.

Does anyone have any thought or ideas?

Thanks so much for any assistance.

Pancho

sounds like a driver issue, whether it be chipset or whatever. I use those
nVidia drivers on my system (Abit IC7-G Intel P4 2.8c) without issue and I
play a ton of Quake 3 so I know it isn't the nVidia driver version itself.

I've had the AN7 for over 2 weeks now, everything is very stable in Windows
XP and 2D Applications. However, yesterday I re-installed some games to
give them a try out. Most 3D games, e.g. Serious Sam 1 & 2 (OpenGL) and
Unreal Tournament 2003 (DirectX) would cause the system to lock up after a
few minutes.

The only way that I've managed to solve this problem is to set AGP speed to
4X and Fast Write to off in the BIOS. I have a Radeon 9700Pro and I believe
this is a common problem with this card.

There is a slight performance hit in reducing the AGP speed, but it's better
to have a stable system that works than one that doesn't!

I did try upping the AGP voltage to 1.60v, always worth a try, but this had
no effect.

I know your TI4600 card is 4X AGP, but I'd make sure Fast Write is off.
I've also heard that adjusting the speed of the AGP/PCI frequency a notch,
I'd try 67/68Mhz, may work.

I'm reasonably impressed with the AN7 overall and managed to o/c my Athlon
2800XP to 2.2Ghz with 200Mhz FSB ( I have not tried to push it more), with
very little temperature increase, 32C idle 42C full and air cooled.

I hope you manage to get your problem sorted.

you guys monitoring temperatures to make sure that you're not going
overtemperature during the heavier loads?

Thanks to all who posted assistance. The problem ended up stemming
from the latest Nvidia drivers (5303) & punkbuster inside of Quake
III. If I disabled punkbuster, the game would play with the 5303
drivers, but you practically cannot play an online game without PB, so
removed the drivers and re-installed 45.23. Played for 2 hours last
night... without a hitch.

Finally, minus the damn video driver issue, the AN7 has been a great
board. Rock solid and very fast.

cool! so punkbuster and the newest nVidia drivers conflict with each other
