agp440.sys boot problem...

Hello,

Sorry for the x post but I need help big time...

I installed a new motherboard and cpu in my system as I fried the old ones.

I did not do a clean install of Windows XP as my HP Pavilion system did not
come with any recovery cd's so I hooked my existing hard drive up to the
system and powered up.

Anyway, it powers up ok but the first time I switched it on there was a blue
error screen that flashed on for a second and then the system rebooted
itself.

Now when I power on I can get past the bios screen ok but before the windows
logo appears I get the boot menu offering safe mode , safe mode with
networking, normal mode etc. A message appears on this screen saying that
the options appear as windows xp did not shut down correctly etc etc

If I choose normal mode then a white progress bar at the bottom of the
screen appears, it gets to the end of it and sits there.....for ever. If I
choose safe mode then it shows it loading all the files from the hard drive
and it gets to a file agp440.sys and it sits there...forever. So whatever
this file is it is causing the system to hang,

Various fixes I have seen include getting into Windows and disabling the
agp440.sys service. But I cannot get into xp at all as my system did not
come with boot cd's.

I can boot to a win98 floppy ok but I cannot access drive c: as it is ntfs,
I thought maybe I could rename agp440.sys to something else.

Any ideas on how to get round this agp440.sys problem? I *really* don't
want to do a clean install as I have no win xp cd's. My hp pavilion system
contains it's setup files on some hidden partition on the drive.

Another solution I read somwhere invloves choosing safe mode and
renaming agp440.sys to agp440.old
Since your system hangs on safe mode and since
agp440.sys sounds like a graphics driver .. You could
try choosing VGA mode from the boot menu

cheers, but vga is not an option on xp boot menu as far as I know, not on
mine anyway

Unless HP hacked the O.S. for some bizarre reason it's there.

But none of this is going to do much good till you get a Windows XP CD and
do a repair install.

Interesting. Doesn't Safe Mode always load VGA drivers. It was my
understanding that drivers are not loaded in Safe Mode. I wonder where I got
that idea.

Right, but VGA Mode will load Windows normally (not Safe Mode). It just
resets the video settings and does not depend on the video card drivers.

OK. Can make for interesting times, but I'd do the same under the
circs. Well, I'd avoid those circs by avoiding big-brand scumbags who
deny me the ability to custom install the OS I paid for.

Kill XP's stupid "auto-restart on system errors" default setting.

OK; that'searly in the boot process, during hardware detection. It's
earlier than SP2 crashing on Prescott + old BIOS, for example.

Not really, no - chances are, AGP440.SYS finishes fine, and whatever
comes next is what is dying. AFAIK, AGP440.SYS is the last listed
driver, so there's a wad of hidden stuff that follows it.

Try with L1 and L2 disabled in CMOS setup - that's what gets in to SP2
vs. Prescott + old BIOS, which also hard locks at this point.

Given the circs (mobo swap), you may be forced to do a "repair
install", which will kill all your updates and patches. After that,
you'd stay offline until you'd turned on the (or added a) firewall!

Another bad move. This is a good example why...

Doesn't help, in the context of SP2 vs. Prescott - just hard locks on
Mup.sys before that, and once again, that impression is spurious (SP2
vs. Prescott hard locks in Update.sys, which doesn't show itself).

Try renaming away Update.sys from Recovery Console. You may have to
use a real XP CD if the "Big Brand" bundleware is too lame to do it.
