Somewhere along the line in moving to a new iMac, I have comprehensively
screwed up my Airport network, and I can't work out how to get it back.
I would be perfectly happy to reset everything.

I have two Airport Extreme base stations. One is connected via an
ethernet switch to my iMac, the other is remote, and used to be on the
same WDS network as a relay to the main one.

1. Currrently I have two networks with the same name. One of them shows
only the main station, the other shows both, with the remote station
having a 169... address, which I know means it is not fully set up.

I would like to clean this up, possibly remove all networks and start
again.

2. When I try to configure the remote station, I get the beachball for a
time, then a request for a password - 'public' should work, as I am sure
I reset the station - then an error message that the utility was unable
to retrieve the configuration.

3. I expect that if I got back to no network names anywhere, both
stations set to factory default, AND both stations showing up and
responding to configuration request, I should be able to get things
going again.

If the base station retained the SSID (network name) you gave it, then
it wasn't fully reset to factory defaults. Hold the reset button in for
at least five seconds. Turn off AirPort on a Mac, configure its Ethernet
port to use DHCP, and connect the base station's LAN Ethernet port
directly to that Mac's Ethernet port. Then launch AirPort Utility (or
AirPort Admin Utility) and see if you can reconfigure the base station.

I could have sworn that I had held in the reset button for well over
five seconds more than once. But maybe I misjudged the time. I
ultimately did get it to go back to factory reset, and it as plain
sailing after that.
