AMD Athlon 64 and XP64

Gents:

Question - will good ol' win XP run fine on an Athlon 64 socket 939 system?

I know that I 'might' tweak up the performance with Win XP64, but is it really necessary or will the Athlon 64 handle 32bit windows just fine?
