AMD Athlon XP (Barton) 2800+ temps

I had the Ajigo MF035-032 cpu fan (recommended on the AMD site for this
processor) and was getting ASUS probe CPU temps of 65C at idle.
My basement gets to 82F (28C) in the summer, where I use the computer (AMD
Athlon XP 2800+).
I did some research and decided on a Zalman, based on cooling and quietness
(and price).
I just installed a Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu.
My idle temp is now 50C.
I can now highly recommend the Zalman CPU heatsink/fan (HSK).
It was a bit of a pain to remove the motherboard for the support brackets,
however the quite factor and large size of this CPU HSK made it worthwhile
for me.

Hope this info helps anyone who is not pleased with their temps and CPU HSK.
NOTE: your motherboard must have the mounting holes and clearance for the
Zalman, see the Zalman site for more info.

This is all well and good, but for about 1/4 the price of this cooler one
can get the same performance and quietness out of a TR2-M1. The Zalman in
normal mode is 25dba, the TR2-M1 is 21dba. You can get down to 20dba with
the quiet mode of the zalman, but performance drops off substantially.
Just an alternative for those that don't want to spend the xtra cash.

50C at idle is really not very good.... your load temps must be near 60C
which really is about the limit. I would suspect that your case is not very
well ventilated. You need to have at least one fan at the back (in addition
to the PSU) blowing out, and one fan in the front/bottom blowing in.

Oh please, AMD's stock XP fans only cool them that good and they put a 3
year warranty on the CPU, 50C ain't **** for a XP, it's normal!

That depends on where the reading is coming from. I assumed it was the
on cpu die temp, which is ok. If it's idling at 50C thermistor temp, it's
not. Mine idles around 32C thermistor and never ever reaches 50C even
under max load.

Just for comparison what is the noise level for the stock AMD hsf? ... tried
to google it but all of the links point to reviews of other hsf
combinations.

Thinking about getting the TR2-M3 (any better than the M1?) ... will it fit
onto my Gigabyte 7N400-Pro2 (ver.1)? ... looked at the Zalman 7000 series
but they're not compatible with my mobo according to the Zalman site.

They're louder than a Vantec Aeroflow which is at least twice as loud as
the TR2-M1 (or M3). This might help.

The M3 is the same as the M1 except no led's on fan. Don't get the M2.
It's louder and has a 70mm TMD fan, and I've had 3 of them die on me
already. Never another one. It should fit about any MB. I've used it on a
few.

Thanks for the reply ... made my mind up now to get a TR2-M3 (no need for
LEDs as I've got a closed case) ... all I gotta do now is find somewhere
that sells them in the UK

cheers for the reply ... all but the first one are actually the TR2-M3SE
model even though 2 of them are shown as the TR2-M3. The SE has sleeve
bearing and 30,000 hours life instead of a ball bearing and 40,000 hours.
Only noticed that from looking at the web site and wondering what the
differences were between models.
