what's the difference between the athlon64 and the opetron?

is it worth upgrading from a 1.7 ghz with a 400mhz bus

i was thinking of getting the "Tyan Thunder K8W" (pci-x is a must) is
this good?

how out of date is that mobo?

and lastly can i use it leaving one of the dual sockets empty?

thank you for you help,

dan

p.s.

i wasn't exactly sure which board to post this to, can somebody point
me to a better one? if they feel i'm in the wrong place

Hi,

Here's some links for you:

Opteron-basic introduction (opteron for servers/workstations that need
dual processors)
http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1815

Athlon64 (desktop solution-single processor, generally)
http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1937

Tyan Thunder KW8 (good board-uses opteron CPU-you can use the board
with a single processor or two CPUs)
http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8w.html
http://www.tweakzone.nl/extreviews/1170
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_cont...ookie%5Ftest=1

Hope that helps
