reading the manual before installing is always annoying

but seriously, i generally look for the 'printer driver only' method of
installing printers. i don't need the ink monitor or other utilities
popping up and running in the background. it seems to me that these are
essentially a way for manufacturers to keep advertising for themselves and
provide little other value. i particularly dislike hp inkjets because you
have to install their monitor software which is part and parcel of the
driver (though, as you pointed out, you can configure it to tone down the
amount of messages it reports).
