I just bought a Linksys WMP54G PCI Wireless adapter (v4.1, at least
that's what it says on the card itself) and even though I've tried the
card in different PCI slots, the PCI 2.1 enabled in the BIOS, WZC off
and on, having used the latest drivers from Linksys and etc, the card
itself refuses to be recognized in Windows XP Pro SP2.

I think I've pretty much given up this card and will be taking it back
to trade it for something else, but wanted to make sure that I'll get
a wireless adapter which will work with my machine.

Who here has their P2B mobo machine with XP Pro SP2 with an 802.11g
wireless adapter connecting to a WRT54G router? Please indicate the
make, model, and if possible, the version of the said adapter. TIA!!

I have a P2B with a PIII 850 Mhz, 448 MB memory, Win XP-home SP2, and a
Linksys Wireless-G PCI adapter. Works like a charm. LOAD THE DRIVER ONLY
and configure wireless networking through windows networking!!!! Do not
load the extra Linksys control panel. All it does is botch the wireless
connections up in XP.

Cheers!

Great, great, thanks for the bit of suggestion on loading the driver
only. I haven't tried that yet. Thanks again. Hopefully, it'll work
out for me.

Hi Charlie,

Still a no go for me...grrrrrr. But, would you mind telling me which
PCI slot you inserted your WMP54G card into? Which one would it be
from the AGP slot?

And did you install the drivers for this card manually by using the
"Add Hardware" utility in Windows you find in your Control Panel?

I tried doing that, but the weird thing is, when I go into the
WMP54Gv4.1 folder you find in the Driver folder and choose the rt61
file, since it says ver 4.1 right on my card, the Add Hardware
doesn't show the card. But when I choose WMPT54Gv4.0 and choose the
rt2500 file, it does show up. So, I click one that to install, but it
will always say that the driver was installed, but the "Device cannot
be started (code 10)".

Do you recall which driver you chose? The rt2500 file or the rt61
file? And do you recall if it said v4.0 or v4.1 right on your card?

As well, can you please tell me where you had obtained your drivers
from for this card? At Linksys' site, for my v4.1 card, the latest
one they list is only: Driver Date: 11/17/2005, Driver Release
Version: 1.0.3.0.

I looked at v4.0 as well just in case and the latest one they have is:
Driver Date: 5/03/2005
Driver Release Version: 3.0.3.0

Sorry for all these questions, but would really appreciate it if you
could help me out with these questions.

Also, do you recall which rev your P2B is? From reading this thread,
http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/ar...p?t-31449.html, it
appears as though the PCI card won't work for < PCI 2.2 standard and I
believe PCI2.1 standard is the highest my P2B rev 1.1 can do. Thanks.

Sorry, one more thing, can you please tell me what other PCI cards you
have in your slots besides the WMP54G? Thanks again.

No Way,
This box is a bunch of old spare parts thrown together so my 4 year old has
something to play with other than my system. I forgot that I had switched
from the P2B to an Abit BH6 when going from 400MHz to the current config.
The BH6 is a PCI 2.1 board. Was playing with slotkets and just could not
get them to work with the P2B 1.02 I have. The BH6 and P2B are very
similar. The Linksys card I have is also a V4 not a V4.1. Note that the
Specifications for it are PCI 2.2 as well. It has worked with everything I
have thrown it in. It worked with the P2B 1.02 that was in this box
previously. I actually did the original install on the P2B and then swaped
out the MB to the BH6 without re-installing windows. Put everything in the
same slots as they were on the other MB.

As for the driver, I used the latest V4 one off the Linksys web site. I
may have applied a MS update to it along the way.

Here is a technical overview of the box in it's current state:

I used the latest free version of sisoftware to get most of this info.
PS: Antec 350W
Abit BH6 with last available BIOS
440BX chipset
FSB 100MHz
CPU P6C Pentium IIIE (running @ 850 MHz) [DOH I cant run 133 MHz]
Mem 1 MOSEL PC100 256MB 2-2-2-6
Mem 2 Siemens PC100 128MB 2-2-2-6
Mem 3 PNY PC100 64MB 2-2-2-6
AGP 1 1x 2x (not currently used)
PCI bus version 2.1 @ 33MHz multiplier 1/3x
Slot 1 Graphics: Diamond Multimedia Radeon 7000 64MB PCI
Slot 2 Network: WMP54G ver 4 (Linksys Ralink RT2500 802.11 CardBus Reference
Card)
Slot 3 Open
Slot 4 Sound: Diamond Multimedia Monster Sound II (Aureal AU8830)
WDC 20GB hard drive.
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1212

Hope this helps some,
Charlie

PS. Thanks for making me dig into this box. I realized it can be tweaked to
get a little more bang pretty easily.
