It would be pretty gross mismanagement not to have started 6 or more
months before releasing the previous version. There are just too many
steps in product development that can't reasonably be compressed, and
which require certain specific steps be taken before you can go on to
the next phase of development. And that's ignoring parts of the
development process that run in parallel with other bits.
The wonder is that it all looks so effortless to the customer, unless
something has gone horribly wrong. Sort of like a major ballet
performance, almost all of which the customer never gets to see.
