I've installed Vista Ultimate on three systems. It went in perfect on a
clean install on an Abit IC7. It went in perfectly on my personal system, a
Striker Extreme (specs below).
I tried to do an upgrade from XP Pro SP2 to Vista Ultimate on an A8n32-SLI
Deluxe. Got the same Vista upgrade advisor message you quoted, all looks
good, so I proceed to do the upgrade, Vista takes 20 minutes or so to do the
upgrade, and on the final reboot it fails with a message to that effect and
proceeds to restore the previous OS... Surprisingly, the XP Pro OS restore
is good, and just to make sure I reload an image of the OS drive taken just
before the upgrade attempt... This box is a Nvidia RAID and SLI 7900GTX
setup, not a basic system, but you would think if it passes the Upgrade
Advisor assessment, it ought to work afterwards...
As they always say, "wait for SP1 (at least)" on any new Microsoft OS if you
know what's good for you... Remember too that clean installs ALWAYS go more
easily than upgrades, except after a clean install you spend two days
reinstalling all the applications that got blown out in the clean
install....
Vista is nice eye candy, and has some nice new functionality. With all the
torque my personal system has I really like the look, feel, and performance,
and it's stable (so far) but Microsoft still has a long way to go with this
OS.
