Does disabling mb options, ie. Firewire contibute to a cooler running
motherboard?

You'll probably find that the southbridge heatsink if very unflat. If
you're up to it, you can reduce the motherboard temps a great deal by
lapping it and using a better thermal compound. A fan will help even
more.

I did so and my motherboard temp is reading 28C right now. I'm guessing
yours is 45C or more?

A normal idle mobo temp for this board can be anywhere between 40C and 50C.
This is due to the location of the mobo temp sensor - very close to the
ICH7R southbridge chip. This chip runs quite hot, especially when any SATA
drives connected to the ICH7R are busy. If the load temp never exceeds 60C,
there's no need to worry. However, this temp reading doesn't really tell you
anything about the condition of the Northbridge, so do not rely solely on
this temp when overclocking the FSB and/or MCH.

What does this mean: I assume yhou would use Artic5

"lapping it??" and using a better thermal compound."

Lapping is refinishing the surface to a mirror finish.
A mirror finish means less trapped air in the interface.
(Just thermal paste and the two metal surfaces, and less
chance of air in the interface.) But an amateur lapping
job, can also leave a surface with a less than flat surface,
which can make things worse.

I wasn't going for a mirror finish in this case, however, just a flat
one.

Yes, I used AS5, but I doubt that the thermal compound you use is as
important as getting the stock crap off and making the heatsink flatter.
