I have the ATI 128MB DDR Radeon 9800 Pro and had a couple of problems
that I am told was related to the video drivers. I have a Dell Dim
8300 desktop containing the card and the current drivers are version
6.14.10.6476. I checked the Dell site and their latest driver for the
card is version 7.97-031212a. On the ATI site, I find the lastest
version listed there is 8.11.....

My desktop is out of warranty, so I'm looking for the best approach to
update the drivers. Dell or via ATI -or- a new card?

Any insights/advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Start with the lastest Dell driver even though it is an older version. I
assume you're seeking stability primarily.

Your card is an ATI-based chipset card made for Dell by a third party
vendor, not necessarily (or very likely) ATI themselves.

Stew,
Do I just download the latest Dell driver and install it over the
current driver or do I have to do some special uninstall of the
current driver?
Thanks

That's another advantage of the Dell driver. Just download it to the
desktop and run it. It will inflate, run and prompt for the necessary
reboot.

Download the Dell driver and install. Or download the ATI Catalyst driver.

BTW, the 128MB Radeon 9800 AGP cards in the 8300s I have all show signs
of ATI branding, not Chaintech or some other Pacific Rim cheapie
manufacturer using an ATI chip.

Frankly, I would go straight for the Catalyst drivers on the ATI/AMD web
site. I used them in an 8300 I set up yesterday. But you need to
install .NET 2.0 first. Now why on earth software drivers need .NET 2.0
is way beyond me.

FWIW, that would be my second option to correct his problem. I'd try the
last Dell driver first, just for the sake of solving his issue........

BTW, the AMD/ATI website does not instill mucho confidence for me.

Ben,

Here's the situation. I do have .NET2.0 SP1 installed. I downloaded
the driver v7.97-031212a from the Dell site and ran it. It appeared
to installed and called for a reboot. I let it reboot and after that,
went to Device Manager to check the Display Version. It was still
v6.14.10.6476, so I am not sure what happened there.

If I go to the Catalyst drivers on the ATI/AWD web site, do I have to
uninstall the current drivers first? I'm a bit confused on how to
proceed to upgrade the driver.

You download the version of the Catalyst driver for the Radeon 9800,
save it somewhere on your hard drive, then run the executable. No need
to remove old drivers... Ben Myers
