That's for sure. I retired in September of 2001 and kids aren't on
the horizon (famous last words) so both are foreign concepts to me.

Briefly kids are a blessing and a pain at times. I know the mothers
here will hate me for saying this (including my wife) but I'm just
telling it like it is (for me). Also forgot, they can get expensive
(clothes, college funds, cars, hardware, illnesses, food, apartments,
etc... x the # of kids) and can develop a personality that will amaze
you (both good and bad). They can make MS look like Apple at times.

Now that you know all of about them, still want kids <g> ??

Do you mean as arrogant as Steve Jobs or do you mean completely clueless
on how much things should cost?

Hi!

With a little bit of forethought, it isn't too bad. Taking a few
minutes to slink outside and start your vehicle will help take the
edge off. Or, if you're into fancy stuff...get one of those remote
starter things.

There are some things you learn in the cold weather--I learned fairly
quickly that it is not a good idea to let the alternator belt slip on
a Diesel-engine equipped pickup truck!

Thanks. I used to have to go to work on below freezing weather often
but it wasn't as bad as below zero weather. I didn't need any engine
block warmer tho there were times when the weather got close to the
tolerance of the antifreeze and the engine would take a 2nd or 3rd try
to turn over (normally it took 1st or 2nd). I did preheat the car
before moving it often then.

It's a big shock to me moving from Florida to Iowa during the worst
winter in YEARS (Al Gore, are listening).

Six weeks. 40 inches of snow. -19 (yes, minus 19) degrees (NOT
including the wind chill).

Gave in Saturday and bought a Ford Explorer

At age 45 the only "kids" I will be having from this point on is the
occasional pet. No, not goats!, cats. No diapers, and I can feed
them dry cat food (cereal) for most of their lives and they will still
be grateful.

I never felt confident enough about my ability to make it on my own to
take on the responsibility for children. I have to admire my father
-- he came from a dirt-poor farm family without even gas or electric,
supported a wife and 3 kids, and went from a one-room schoolhouse with
a graduating class of 6 to be VP of a corporation's sales and
marketing.

Throughout, I think he had to take many leaps of faith, which has been
the missing ingredient in my decisions.

I don't have many regrets, however. I enjoy the simple things, do
some volunteer work, and have some good friends.

<begin dry humor)
I try to enjoy each day to the fullest, and not be afraid of the fact
that I will probably die alone in a nursing home, neglected, decrepit,
friendless, without family, and with noone to come to my funeral or to
even scatter my ashes.
</end dry humor>

Kumbaya, a rare installment in my continuing series, "thanks for
sharing".

Yeah, I would be in shock too moving from tropical weather to winter
weather like yourself. I hope that Explorer is a 4 wheel drive <g>.
I forgot what snow tires are since I moved to Texas.

Wise choice to get a 4WD (or AWD). My front-wheel Toyota Matrix isn't
cutting it this year.
