Journey, I'll email you over the weekend.

I managed to get the laptop fixed (don't know exactly what I did now
but whatever I did, it is fine now but will get a spare HD just in
case; I'm not a good teacher because I can't explain these things I
do well but somehow I'm pretty systematic in my approach from
experience) and replaced a dead drive and installed an OS in my
daughter's pc, etc... . Now I have to read a small print 6 page
lease and 12 page addendum this weekend for my daughter in Austin (she
wants to move from dorm to apartment).

Boy are you lucky not to have kids (my wife and other mothers will
"hate" me for this). Ok, my daughters are good but they don't come
cheap especially with 2 in college at the same time and likely to go
to graduate school besides the time/responsibility.

Anyway, I'll try to email you tomorrow (just to refresh your memory...
concerning Apple laptops). I think you're well qualified for laptop
comparison discussions!! I notice sometimes your posts get long
about this but always very informative. Sometimes informative reviews
can't be short .

Care and feeding of daughters, teenage and older, is definitely more than for
sons. Or maybe it's just that we've taught our sons to fend for themselves
somewhat well. But they are not a serious drain on the pocketbook.

I think I agree with you Ben tho not as a parent but as a son of
parents. I don't think I was a major expense to my parents even with
my 5 yr college degree (guessing under $5000 for everything including
transportation, books, etc..). But I was also very conscientious of
spending my parents' money so I went outa my way to spend as little as
I could. I once turned down a free trip to St. Thomas because they
were going and asked me if I wanted to come but I said no. I really
wanted to go but felt guilty spending their money besides I thought
they should be alone. My daughters on the other hand would have no
problem spending money for this purpose .

Ben, if you got sons, want to trade ? Ok, I'm just kidding
for the sake of others who get mad at me for writing such a thing.

Just e-mailed you back. The most skilled writers get their ideas
across with less words. I sometimes write longer because I don't have
the time to write better.

One thing I like about groups like this is the different areas of
expertise people bring. I am a gadget geek, and want to know how
things work so I may end up with experiences related to that (for
example, I am probably going to get an iPhone after Apple releases the
SDK and after prices come down and memory goes up one more iteration).

Others have their expertise. If I wanted to ask a TV / PVR related
question, Tom Scales is definitely the resident expert.

Otherwise, I have gotten quite an education from this group. Almost
all the technical knowledge I have has come from here as people have
responded when I asked questions. So, if someone else has a question
that I had in the past, I try to give back by passing on what was
given to me.

On the bright side, fellowship money is not based on, so if they're good
students they might be able to come up with most, if not all, the $$$
for grad school (as my son did when he went to CalTech to study
astronomy - he was a *very* good student <g>). FWIW, both my kids are in
their 30's now, married and each has a child - so I have a
granddaughter, 3 1/2, and a grandson, 2, unbelievably terrific!

Thanks Journey... just read it and as usual, very informative <g>.
And yes after reading your email, I believe you are a gadget geek but
I like that because I rather ask your opinion than read some pro
reviewer who has reviewed the gadget for just a day or two.

I'm not a gadget geek but I do like technology. I tend to watch my
pennies (family has to come first ) but feel grateful I can so
far afford the gadgets I need. I tend to shop carefully or try to
before I buy, ie: the laser printer P2015dn (which I like a lot) and
owe you THANKS for its recommendation !!

By the way, on the topic of the HP P2015dn, I just got the correct
rebate check in the amount of $150. If you recall I posted earlier in
this newgroup about getting a rebate from HP but it was only for $100
and I called them to discuss it and they had agreed it was in error
and to disgard that old check. I did but I agree with some other
posters that told me (my wife later said the same thing) ... "how do
you know they will send the correct check to you"? Well they were
right, I did not but at least I have a "happy" ending in any case. In
effect I think with the rebate, I paid about $230 (forgot exact amt)
for that printer and it is WELL worth it. Actually it is probably
worth $300 to $400 IMO. I love the speed it prints at even over a
wireless network. It is pretty fast. In truth tho, I think my old
lj4 printed a slightly darker page of text but for the money and
features, this printer is better. Of course in fairness to the lj4,
this printer has had about 15 years to improve itself from the lj4.
Ok, as you can see I'm a little touchy about my old lj4 but thats
because I had it for about 14 or 15 years of care free printing so it
became a part of my family <g>. It was repairable (you can still buy
the parts on line) but the cost to do it in my opinion, just wasn't
practical. It's funny because I mulled over it as if it was an old
pet of mine that I had to decide whether to put it down or not (btw,
I've been there twice and I grieved each time). Maybe I get a little
to attached to things ???

Thanks again Journey for your email ... appreciated. -RnR-

I don't want to trade my boys for anything or anybody. Never have, never will.
They are now too old and too independent to be traded anyway. Thanks for the
offer... Ben Myers
