Journey, I just had delivered to me, the 256mb ram for the P2015dn
printer. I just set the printer up with a 10' usb cable and now just
installed the add'l ram. For a minute I had trouble installing the
ram correctly but reseated it and all went well. It then recognized
it with no problem (printed out a configuration page). Based on test
pages, it is a fast printer tho it is printing in 5e mode (??, not 6)
and it seems just a tad less quality than my old lj4 but the
difference is not significant to go back <g>. I still can't believe
this 256mb ram chip from Kingston.com is like 3% the price elsewhere.
My initial impression of this printer is that it will serve me well
for my future needs (I already printed thru my home network the rebate
forms). I've got several inkjets in the house in case I need color
printing (low demand) which is why I didn't consider a color laser.

Thanks Journey for your opinion on this printer. I think you're right
and from the 100 or so reviews also on this printer, most from
newegg.com (where I got it from) you were in the 98% or so majority.
Thank you!!

ps-- I'm going to mail the $150 mail in rebate either today or by
Tuesday next week (as certified mail w/ return receipt) thanks
to you <grin> ! It's too much to just ignor.

I just logged on to thank you -- I changed the subject so that it
would be found in a search. I just installed the $13 256MB memory
upgrade and all is well. If it's that inexpensive, I wonder why HP
doesn't just include it.

When I researched the laser printers, most of the other ones had small
percentages of users complaining about a specific problem. One was
curled paper. Another was initial power surge.

I use PCL 6 -- whatever that means. I don't know what 5e is, but I
saw that there was a driver for it.

I have 2 other printers too -- one is a wireless all-in-one (HP 7410)
that I use for copying and color printing, which I have not needed to
do. The other is a wireless Canon inkjet that will be dedicated to
printing photos if I ever get around to installing Vista drivers for
it.

Anyway, I wouldn't have known about the inexpensive memory upgrade so
thanks right back atcha.

I'm just glad we could both benefit by the cheap memory. I still
can't believe the price but it's a done deal . We deserve a
break now and then . This is even a better deal then the one I
missed for a GPS that perhaps mistakenly was selling for $100 less
(for one nite at Toy's R US) than the norm but I'll get that GPS
early next year. Of course I still owe thanks to MZB (I think) for
mentioning that to me... he tried but I was 5 hours too late to read
his post and Toys R US was already sold out.

Also, I was testing several prints of my rebate form and I too noticed
that the PCL 6 has more options for printing and seems to print nicer
than the PCL 5e. That said, I think the PCL 5e is a tad faster but
not that much. I may do as you said and just use 6. I have both
installed so I can switch to either. I will say the printer is nice
because now when I walk over from another room to pickup a printed
paper, it's waiting on me instead of me waiting on it as was the case
for my old lj4 printing over my home network <g>.

So lets call it even now; I owed you some gratitude and you owed
me !!!

I bought into the inkjet claims of "18 pages / minute". My inkjets
never came even close to the stated specs even when in draft.

Would you believe Journey a few minutes ago I went into Wachovia
(bank) and they had essentially the same printer (one extra paper
tray). I was laughing inside because I think banks depend a lot on
their printers so I felt reassured we both got the right printer <big
smile>.

Yep -- it pays to do research. I seldom regret a purchase because I
check out the reviews, especially the user reviews. Amazon is my best
source for those and then CNET. Also, this group has been a great
resource and helped direct me to some of my purchases (e.g. the
Westinghouse HDTV which I like a lot).

Me too. I rely on consumer/owner reviews a LOT before I consider a
purchase... more so than the critics because the critics don't always
take long enough to review a product and sometimes when they have good
to say, I wonder if it's due to a conflict of interest (advertiser).
I feel the owners (for the most part aside from the whiners) usually
level with you whether they like a product or not. Usually I go to
newegg.com if they sell the product and have the user's reviews. I've
used Cnet but not often Amazon but I'll take a look at Amazon next
time to see if I should use them more often.

What size Westinghouse HDTV so you have and how long? I don't have
any fancy tv's yet but I would like a 53" in my living room
eventually. And then I might have to buy digital boxes or something
for the bedroom tv's, I dunno. I'm not that educated on HDTV stuff
yet.

I started out looking for a 32" or 37" HDTV, wanting to pay around
$750. Fortunately when I posted that here, several people encouraged
me to get a larger one.

I ended up with a full 1080p 42" HDTV. I never would have considered
Westinghouse. It seems more like a toaster company than a TV company.
However, I am very pleased with it and it has pretty good reviews. It
works great as a computer monitor too.

If I could do it over again, I would instead get a 47". My "TV
experience" is vastly improved with this one though. I use a 5.1
computer speaker system from a prior Dell and it sounds great,
although using that instead of a home entertainment system means I
can't change the volume via remote.

I recommend getting the largest size that will fit in your space and
that your wallet can afford. It's something that you will be using
for years to come. I also recommend getting full 1080p for the same
reasons. Do it right and you won't have any regrets.

I forgot to mention that the one I ended up with cost $1,100. The
Westinghouse has an attractive, dark design. Very nice in any decor.

Thanks. I won't get less than 53" for the living room. There is a
rule of thumb about viewing distance and the recommended size of
screen but I forgot right now but I calculated around 50+ at the time
I read it. I'll get serious about researching all of this when I get
closer to the time I want to buy. Actually the Sony I have now is a
very nice screen but when my wife and I watch nature shows, I'm aware
the larger screen will look even better (assuming the resolution,
etc... are on par with the Sony). As to how much I want to spend,
that's easy, very little .... I want to live on champagne or better
with a beer budget.
