I have all sizes, up to 63". The sweet spot is 46-52 or so.

Vizio has a new 52" LCD with full 1080P support for just $2200 list
price. I suspect it is spectacular, particularly given the price. We
have two of the 32" Vizio 720P sets ($499 on sale) and they may be the
best sets in the house. Certainly the best value for the money.

I'm partial to Samsung and Vizio.

Thanks Tom. I'm not ready to buy right now but probably next year
(not sure when yet). I also have to determine if I will want to hang
it over my fireplace on the wall or where do I want to place it.
That's important to me because it may determine what size I will
want/need as well as if I require a professional installation. I'll
also need help to move the Sony somewhere else as I think it weighs
like 180 to 200 pounds.

Ok, forgive me as I'm getting too detailed here but the bottom line is
thank you for the information Tom and I'll keep it handy when I'm
getting closer to ready. I know its nice to watch sports and nature
on the big screen.

OT: don't forget to buy boots for the snow or ice unless you already
have them. Also might want to buy scarfs and gloves next and don't
forget the ice scraper for the cars !! And check your cars for the
correct anti-freeze for the colder weather. Sorry, just want to help
your move go smoothly especially going from the south to the north!!!
Perhaps you already know this, having lived in the north <g>.

Samsung sure seems to have its act together. I used to think of it as
a Korean Japanese-wannabe company, but it surpasses many of its
Japanese competitors.

When I looked at Vizio I didn't like the appearance. The particular
model had an inverted bezel on the bottom (lol try to figure that
out). Also, two display models at SAMS had volume problems, which of
course doesn't necessarily mean anything but it made a negative
impression on me.

I am about 10' away from my 42" 1080p Westinghouse. When I use it
with HDTV channels, the size seems about right, although a 47" would
add to a "wow" experience. When not in HDTV wide mode, I would like a
larger screen. I am happy that I at least got this size because if I
would have gotten something smaller I would have a lot of regrets.

I could be wrong but I think you had mentioned the Westinghouse Tom so
thank you for that, and also for your recommendation to keep things
simple and go with the cable TV company's PVR. For $14 / month it
does what I want it to.

Put it directly in front of your fireplace. The ambient light from
behind will produce a great effect. Remove the batteries from your
smoke detector -- that way you won't get interrupted while watching a
movie.

P.S. -- Fireplace in Austin? I guess for the frigid 50-degree
weather, eh? :-)

(17 degrees here in Madison now -- I would _love_ to live someplace
where there isn't snow)

No, I'm not in Austin but my daughter is till tomorrow nite when she
returns home for her winter break. I live in the west suburbs of
Houston (2.25 hours from her dorm in Austin) and right now it's about
63 degrees where I am and supposedly to go to the low 70's later this
week (70ish is the norm for now during the day). I doubt unless we
get a REAL cold front we'll see a white Christmas here. It usually
snows about 1" or less about every 10 years or so around here.

I use to love snow (when I lived in NY) if I didn't have to drive to
work in it tho it did make it hard (a pain in the neck) to visit
people or go shopping sometimes. Fortunately that type weather is
rare around here.

So far this winter has been warm for me. I have a great winter parka,
super-squall gloves, gortex boots. If I lived someplace else I might
miss the variety.

The best thing about Madison winters is that it keeps the multitudes
of people in warmer climates away. It's a great city and I would hate
to see it get overpopulated.

I'll stay here the rest of my life because it's where my friends are.

I understand. I lost a lot of friends when I left NY for Texas. It
was a big sacrifice to move for my career and leave all my friends
behind for a place where I had no friends (or family) and a strange
land where Yankees aren't welcomed too well. If it wasn't for my wife
(I met her in Houston but she is not from Texas), I might regret the
decision even if financially it was a good move. I'm not sorry now
but it was a big sacrifice so I understand how you feel VERY WELL
since I made the choice once. Enjoy them while you can !!

I never understood the concept of hanging a TV above the fireplace. All of
the "experts" say mount it at eye level (sitting down) for optimal viewing.
Guess you have to stand up to watch if mounted above a fireplace. Always
thought it looked dumb too!
