Normally, if the backlight is completely off, the image is not
sufficiently visible to be useable. The exception would be if the
laptop has a "transflective" screen, these are common in PDA's (Palm and
Pocket-PC's), but I'm not aware of any mass-production, mass-market
laptops that have such a screen.
