I recently purchased my first laptop and noticed there is an option to
turn off the back light feature of the screen.

is this just a battery saving feature or can the computer be used with
the back light switched off ?

Apologies for asking this basic question but I have been trying to get
through to the manufacturers (Acer) support desk for a week with this,
and another question, but unable to get through.

Hope you can help.

Martin

Do you mean fn-whatever?
If so, then it's generally to switch to an external monitor.

Turning the LCD off does save battery.

Normally, if the backlight is completely off, the image is not
sufficiently visible to be useable. The exception would be if the
laptop has a "transflective" screen, these are common in PDA's (Palm and
Pocket-PC's), but I'm not aware of any mass-production, mass-market
laptops that have such a screen.
