Beginner Intel Mac ?

My wife and I both have PowerPC Macs (Powerbook G4s of different
vintage) and both run OS X 10.4.8.

I backup and clone both to external FW hard drives connected to one.

If I have a problem/crash, I can boot from the clone of one on the other.

I assume if one of us has a Power PC and the other purchases an Intel
Mac that that type of emergency operation would not be possible. That
is... it is not possible to boot from a PowerPC OS X on an Intel Mac.

Is that correct?

Thank you.

Presumably because he wants to do on the working computer what he had
been doing on the dead computer.

Maybe it is obvious to you but all the same (having gone trough the same
experience of replacing PPC with Intel Macs):

Data and applications are not a problem when moving to an Intel Mac,
EXCEPT the applications that still ran under OS 9 /Classic. There is no
Classic environment on Intel Macs. Mac OS X code for PPC will be
emulated, and that works well.

So if worst comes you will connect your backup on a FW disk (PPC) to
your new Intel machine, and transfer everthing necessary (Applications
an User data) with Migration Assistant.

You do need to replace the OS 9 applications with newer ones, or export
the data etc ON A PPC Mac.

But you can. Alsoft is shipping architecture-independent media for DW4.
