Just off hand, seems like you should be contacting nVidia.
For me, I don't update a driver without doing a back up first. No
exceptions. Because, as you say, I don't want an unusable computer.
That is, the more important it is for you to have a computer running,
the more important it is to do back ups and the less willing you
should be in updating a driver, or, installing any software.
A side problem is that winxp came out before the nf7 board so the
driver support is not as good.

There is a very high convenience level you can achieve if you buy a
system where no drivers are needed outside of what comes with windows.
Such a situation will occur this year - just as windows vista is
released. It *should be* driver complete for hardware currently in
existence.
