Has anybody else with an NF7-S had issues with installing the nVidia
v5.1 driver update? I found that the soundstorm drivers don't stick,
though manage to display the previous versions, and display soundstorm
control panel with nVidia mixer. I rolled back the drivers, but the
Mixer doesn't work with the previous versions.

Anyway, so I logged the case with Abit. It took them two weeks to come
back with:

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your mail.
Please reinstall NVIDIA driver and try again.

Gee, I'm glad my machine was unusable why I waited for their response.

Idiots.

Just off hand, seems like you should be contacting nVidia.

For me, I don't update a driver without doing a back up first. No
exceptions. Because, as you say, I don't want an unusable computer.
That is, the more important it is for you to have a computer running,
the more important it is to do back ups and the less willing you
should be in updating a driver, or, installing any software.

A side problem is that winxp came out before the nf7 board so the
driver support is not as good.

There is a very high convenience level you can achieve if you buy a
system where no drivers are needed outside of what comes with windows.
Such a situation will occur this year - just as windows vista is
released. It *should be* driver complete for hardware currently in
existence.

Did you download that package from Abit, or Nvidia?

And how would WE know that you actually installed the CORRECT drivers?
There is the NF7-S mobo and there is the NF7-S version *2* mobo. You need
to get the correct version of the mobo drivers.

Also, why are you going to Abit for the nVidia driver set? I don't. I get
mine from nVidia! I have to wonder who is the idiot that cannot associate
"nVidia" from the chipset with the nVidia web site for where to find the
chipset driver set. Or was the "Idiots" proclamation a self-directed
observation?

I pulled down both, only to find that the Unified driver package from
each was identical, only that the Abit one was in an additional layer
deep of zip file.

- Because nVidia bundled all their XP drivers for nForce1 and nForce2
into the "unified driver" set, meaning there is exactly one package to
download for all the boards based on these chipsets. Its impossible to
download the INCORRECT drivers, because they are all in one package.

-The nVidia site clearly states that they do not support non-nVidia
badged products, and to refer to the m/b manufacturer.

- The unified drivers on the Abit site and those on the nVidia site are
identical, just that Abit zip it up in a file and add "Abit" in the
filename.

- If I had an NF7-S v2, I would have called in an "NF7-S2". Because I
didn't, I must be talking about version one. They are different
products, but both based on the nForce2 chipset meaing that, according
to both the nVidia and Abit websites, they use the same driver package
for XP. If you'd ever downloaded XP drivers from the nVidia website,
you'd know this. If you haven't, you have nothing to contribute as the
original question specifically addressed XP.

So the problem would happen with download from Nvidia as well!

Also I think you download the same file for the NF7 - which doesn't have the
soundstorm APU. So that means there must be two audio drivers in that
download.
