I got a dell latitude x200 off of ebay. Great machine, works 100% to
replace my sony that I've been using 4 years.
Anyway, I decided to upgrade form 2000 to xp pro.
Put in my new legal disk, and started the upgrade process. Pro 2000
had a couple of neat programs I wanted to keep, so I didn't run a
clean install.
Problem: the screensaver is set at 4 minutes. I didn't know that.
I'm half way through installing xp, and when it get to loading device
drivers, it reboots after 4 minutes and comes back to 39 min left,
installing drivers.
I've killed a hard drive before by stopping a windows install by
pulling the plug, and I'm in limbo with the screensaver constatly
going back to 39 minutes left.....
Is there any way I can uninstall xp, get back to 2000 pro and disable
the screensaver? Any Ideas would be appreciated.
Regards,
Ron

First, screensavers do not shut down computers, they just turn off the
screens. Something else is going on.

Also, there is no screensaver, and no other type of energy management,
in Windows setup.

But the laptop itself may have power management settings in the BIOS.
Next time it reboots, you need to "catch it" when it reboots and get
into bios setup and if there are any settings, you need to change them
to not be an issue.

However, I'm skeptical of your analysis of what is happening.

Also, don't do a Windows install while running on battery power.

The power management idea sounds like the winner here, I'll get into
bios and look for that. Also, I'm not running off of battery power,
I've got the power adapter plugged in the wall with go lights on.
Actually I don't have an analysis of what's happening, Just telling
what I see. 'mI not a laptop guy, I've only gutted and rebuilt
desktops and things are a little different in the laptop world. Any
other Ideas would be appreciated.

Well, the next best idea is a clean install.

Sounds like it's time for a clean install...
If there is critical stuff on the HD then it may be worth installing a new
HD for the XP install - you can later use a USB HD box to access the old HD
and see what can be saved.

The clean install had entered my mind, but I didn't want to stop a
windows install mid stream. I did that once and it rendered my hard
drive useless. HOWEVER,
It's rare that I make a back up copy of anything, but I had made a
backup copy of the new XP disk, and when I put the copy in, it took
just fine and finished the setup. Go figure. I can't see any
scratches on my original.
Thanks all for your help.

Ron

Now, That seems familiar. I upgraded my Toshiba 2435 to XP Pro, and it
locked up during the install. I also had a second copy of XP Pro (my
workplace Corporate edition - I had already put in the 25 character code
from my personal upgrade copy). It took using the corporate edition and an
external USB CD/DVD to finish the upgrade, which went on flawlessly from
that point.

I ran all sorts of file copy and disk inspection of my upgrade disc and
found nothing wrong. Several months later, having moved on from the Toshiba
to an HP Laptop, I put the original XP Home back on the Toshiba for my Wife
and used my XP Pro upgrade on my HP. It worked flawlessly, the first time.

Go Figure!?

And the next best idea would be to *not* quote a whole message just to
add one line of babble.

Many would consider that to be a downgrade.
