Dimension E510 with 5.1 integrated sound on motherboard
Windows XP-MCE
SP2
All latest and greatest M/S updates

When I connect an external device to the blue Line-In connector, I can not
adjust the sound from the computer. I either have to adjust the sound from
the device or at the speakers. I have even reinstalled the operating system
(Dell supplied/purchased CDs) and got the same results.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
~alan

Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - Audio Tab
Both Playback and Recording have a Volume button.
There should be level adjustments for Line In on both of those
screens.
Have you tried that yet?

Sometimes those connectors change functions depending on your
configuration. Try adjusting other inputs to see if it is being called
something else. If you have a utility where you set up your speaker
configuration, it might show what each connector does.

I don't know if your computer has the capability, but a couple I have
seen do.

Hmmmm, that is a possibility. I plan on doing a rebuild over the summer so
before I install the drivers for this device, an older Hauppauge WinTV card,
I will test it out.

Thanks for the insight.
