Can a third hard drive work in a Dell Dim 8300?

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 with two SATA hard drives , two DVD burners and
a floppy drive. Can I install a third hard drive and, if so, how would it be
cabled and jumpered and where would it be mounted?

Thanks

Frank

Frank,

If you don't have a place to mount the drive internally consider an external
box for the drive. If you don't have a free drive interface then you will have
to add one using a PCI/PCIe card to do so. Depending on the performance/size
you want would dictate what interface to go with. An external box with SCSI
drives and a SCSI interface in your computer can get you a very fast drive
interface at probably a high cost. An external USB drive would be probably the
slowest and one of the lower prices.

Yes. Since you're using (2) SATA hard disks, you do have the ability to add
IDE drive(s) to the system provided you can find a bay in which to mount the
drive.
Or, you could purchase a SATA PCI controller card to add additional SATA
drive(s) if you have the drive bays.
Or, you could purchase a USB external drive, or.........

The 8300 has motherboard connectors for 2 PATA(IDE) hard drives as well
as the SATA drives that you already have. Problem is, with 2 DVD
burners and a floppy where would you put them? Why not get an external
HD--USB or firewire(your 8300 may or may not have a firewire port)?

Or use eSATA if no drive bays available.

Yep. Essentially the same case, though yours has far more ventilation. He's
got another 3.5" external bay (meant for a zip drive, etc.....)

Thanks for all the thoughts. I just might consider an external. I just got
an email about sale prices on flash and external drives from Office Max.
