Can't get my Dell to recognize a new drive

I'm having a strange problem with a new drive that I initially
installed with no problem, but after I replaced an existing drive with
it, SETUP is no longer recognizing it.
My 60GB second drive was filling up so I got a new 120GB Maxtor
(6Y120L0) to replace it with. I disconnected one of my two CD-ROMs
and hooked up the new drive in its place:

Primary IDE Master: Boot drive
Primary IDE Slave: 60GB second drive
Secondary IDE Master: CD-ROM
Secondary IDE Slave: <<new 120GB drive>>

Dell uses cable-select, so I set the jumpers on the new drive
accordingly. SETUP automatically recognized the new drive. I used
Maxtor's Maxblast utility to set up the drive and to copy the contents
of my 60GB drive to it. So far so good.
But when I removed the old 60GB drive and hooked up the new drive
where it had been, SETUP no longer recognized the new drive. I've
tried:
--Changing the jumpers on both drives on that cable from cable select
to master & slave
--The cylinder limitation jumper
--Replacing the cable

....all with no effect. I put the new drive back in the position I
originally installed it, where it's still recognized by SETUP and
works fine, but I need that slot for my 2nd CD-ROM.
Anyone have any idea what the problem might be, or tips of things
to try? Someone suggested that my my boot drive and the new drive
(both Maxtors!) may just not like each other. There's gotta be a way!

System:
Dell XPS R450
Win98SE
Dell BIOS A13
PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0

You say setup no longer recognizes the drive. You mean the BIOS does not
recognize it?
You are using the original 80 pin data cable?

Did you try making the HD master and the CDROM slave? Did you try without
the CDROM attached? What is the maximum HD size that can be created under
Window 98SE? Did you use the Maxtor supplied floppy to partition the drive
into (2) 60GB partitions?

Hmm, could it be possible that the Maxtor's Maxblast Utility installed
some translation software and it has to be on the IDE port it was
originally installed on? I know the R450 can do 80G drives ok without
translation software, but not sure on the 120. Will BIOS see it if it
is the Primary Master by itself with all other IDE devices
disconnected?

Did you set the CMOS back to "Auto Select" and reboot (Alt-B) after changing
drives on the cables?

Thanks for your help in figuring this out. Here are my answers:

I guess that's right; the BIOS doesn't see it in its new position
(in the slave slot on the primary cable, with my boot Maxtor drive in
the master slot), although it did see it when I connected it
temporarily to my secondary IDE cable in place of one of my two
CDROMs. I tried both the original cable and also a new one.

From: Kernelpanic ()
> Did you try making the HD master and the CDROM slave? Did you try
> without the CDROM attached?

The HD worked fine when I temporarily hooked it up to the cable
shared by a CDROM drive. It was when I moved it to the cable shared
by my boot drive that the system wouldn't recognize it. I did try
making the boot drive master and the new drive slave -- no luck.
Unfortunately, due to physical constraints, I can't (permanently) put
the new drive on a cable shared by a CDROM -- not without having to
give up one of my two CDROMs.

> What is the maximum HD size that can be created under Window 98SE?

I'm not sure, but it's bigger than the size of this drive -- when
hooked up in the position my system can see it (replacing one of my 2
CDROMs), the full 120GB are recognized.

From: See signature below ()

Not to my knowledge. The master/slave settings should
exclusively determine that -- I see nothing in the Maxblast literature
to indicate otherwise.

> Will BIOS see it if it is the Primary Master by itself with all

Hmmm, I haven't tried that. But shouldn't the primary master be
the boot drive? I'm really not interested in installing the OS on
this new drive and making it the boot drive, as I'll be replacing the
system soon. I was just hoping to connect this as a secondary drive I
could carry over to my new system.

Any other ideas?

What happens if the new hard drive is the only drive attached on the
primary? The new cable you tried is also an 80 pin cable?

i think this reply is on the right ttrack to the answer...

when you used maxblast to cofigure the new drive positioned in the secondary
1 position the boot drive (primary 0) was updated so that this large drive
could be fully utilitzed in this older system which only natively reconizes
80gb or so drives.

but instead of even troubleshooting and gussing why you are having
problems... why not try this?:
put the 120 in the primay 1 position (where you ultimately want it to me)
and put the old 60gb data drive on the secondary controller. run maxblast
and set up the 120gb again and copy the 60gb again... then replace the 60gb
with the original cd drive.
