I'm running a Dimension 5150C. Can anyone address this problem? The issue
description is below, as well as
a summary of my system information.

I have uninstalled Easy CD Creator, re-installed Windows Media Player, and
re-installed RealJukebox (the latest versions). I have looked for more
recent drivers but have not found any. I still am not able to write CD's,
neither music nor data.

Douglas, in Cold Lake Alberta.

Windows Help and Support Center gave the following explanation:

Windows XP Home Edition

Issue Description:
A CD-recording driver is installed that might cause stability problems,
including problems shutting down and problems using a CD/DVD drive. This
driver will be disabled.

This driver might have been installed by Easy CD Creator, Windows Media
Player or RealJukebox. You might not be able to record CDs until you obtain
compatible drivers.

Roxio, Inc. provides an update for Easy CD Creator users at the Easy CD
Creator Updates Web site.

For Windows Media Player users, see the Microsoft Web site at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...wsxp/roxio.asp.

For RealJukebox users, see the RealNetworks Web site at
http://switchboard.real.com/rj2/?cd=xpfix.

You know, I don't know that I would've uninstalled all of that stuff, but
that's .dll's under the bridge.

I would've probably attempted a quick and easy Windows system restore
(start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore) to a date before
the problem started.

That still might be an option now.

I would go into the Device Manager and delete the CD drive. Reboot and
it should discover the "new" hardware and install the drivers. Might be
a good idea to download the drivers first, just in case....

Thank you all for your replies. I've tried almost everything mentioned in
these few emails, to no avail. I will try a system restore this weekend and
let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

I think that's a huge amount of work for nothing. There are NO drivers
for optical drives. Reinstalling windows is very unlikely to do
anything. Optical drives are driven by the standard IDE drivers for
reading, and by your installed burning software (whatever it is) for
writing.

Thank you all again.

It appears the CDR is broken. I'll have to call a technician to come and
look at it. It's good to know it's not a software problem. I can appear
somewhat intelligent before s/he hands me the bill.

Buy a new CD-R drive or better yet a DVD-R for $50 or less and install it
yourself. Open the case, unscrew the mounting screws and power/data cable -
replace with new drive.
A Tech is going to charge you upward of $100 to come to your house.

This is a nice inexpensive Samsung dual-layer/dual-format DVD burner with
added DVD-RAM capabilities, for around $30.
