04/09/2004

Sometimes I get an error message saying "ERROR: Reserve Device
Device is reserved by other process. (0x8000001a)
You will not be able to read and write to the disc through drive
letter access."

This is when trying to format a CD-R using Adaptec DirectCD Wizard
(unlocked).
The CDRW is a Philips 800 series. I have an OS of Win98, 512 RAM,
Pentium II. This doesn't happen all the time and I don't know when or
why it happens. Is there something I can do to correct this when it
does happen (it's happening now) so that I can write to my disc?
Please respond to

Thank you in advance.

My only guess is that you have a harddrive or other conflicting device
on the same IDE cable, and they are conflicting. Remember, CD drives
on Secondary IDE, HD of Primary IDE.

Since you didn't say what the speed of your Pentium II CPU is, all I can
suggest is burning your disks at a SLOWER burn speed, such as at 12x. You
may be overtaxing your older slower CPU if you're trying to burn at 48x.

Thank you for responding. Your response sounds logical to me. I have
the HDD as master IDE and CD-ROM as secondary master and Burner as
secondary slave (for more than 3 years). I have burned several CDs
without a problem, so why would the CD-ROM & the burner have a
conflict every once in a while? Wouldn't the conflict be constant?
Please send a response to my email address of
(faster for me) as it took me a while to find my question to check for
responses. If you'd rather not, that's OK - I'll take the time to
look for responses again.
Thank you
