Centrino vs Core 2 Duo ?

Im after a new laptop, i am debating either a Sony Vaio BX297XP or a
Sony Vaio AR21M. They are roughly the same spec but one has a 2ghz
Intel Centrino or a 1.88ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.

What is the differance between the two processors?

The centrino is cheaper and has better gfx card, hard disk and ram.

simplistically, you can just take a Duo as double processors,
although it's not exactly so.

New programs should have take the Duo into account, so there should be
really performance improvement with Duo. While old softwares act on Duo
just as on Centrino.

The Core2 Duo is a much faster processor. It's also dual core, the Centrino
is single core unless its a Core Duo.

What do you mean by a faster processor when the single is 2.0ghz and
the duo is 1.8ghz?

The Core2 is a better design then the Centrino. Clock speed can only be
used to compare two otherwise identical processors. A 2GHz Centrino is
faster than a 1.8GHz Centrino but it's slower than a 1.8GHz Core2. Also
the Core2 has two cores, the Centrino only has one.

All GHz are not equal ;-) At any given clock speed the Core2duo is
faster than any old P4 models. My 6600 (2.4GHz) runs real programs which
are CPU-bound about 2.5x faster than my 2.8GHz P4.

Just like a Pentium-M is roughly 1.5x faster at any given clock, because
it does more work per clock.

It's not exact, and some workloads will show even more benefit from the
core2duo, if they use a lot of float numbers.

Oh, and the C2D uses less power while it runs faster, and runs cooler.
If there's a drawback I haven't seen it.

One thing that should be noted, but so far has been completely ignored
by other posters in this thread is that Centrino is not the name of any
particular Intel processor, instead it is the name of an Intel
combination package. This package includes the processor, a chipset, and
a Wi-Fi radio.

The Centrino package would include a mobile processor. Originally this
meant a Pentium-M processor, but it has since been updated and it now
includes the latest Core or Core2 processors. The Pentium-M was
succeeded by the Core, which was itself then succeeded by the Core2
processors. So when you say "Centrino vs. Core 2", it's a nebulous term,
because a Core 2 processor could very well be part of the package.

That being said, looking up the Sony Vaio BX297XP, one sees that it's an
older machine, it comes with a Pentium M processor, which is the oldest
form of Centrino.
