My parent's 8gig Maxtor has the click. Nothing critical on the drive, but a
lot of pics. Is there a CHEAP way to recover data?

You could try RescuePro File Recovery from LCTechnology. I used it to
recover some photos from a flash card needed for a business report.

http://www.lc-tech.com/software/rprowindetail.html

I had some problems using the program and called tech support. Got a live
person who walked me through it and also followed up with emails. Good
support, at least back then. YMMV. For $40 its worth a shot. They also
have a demo to try. Please post back if you try it and it works or doesn't.

Try RrecoverMyFiles http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ download the free demo
first if software shows recocoverable files,
then purchase program. Note shop ebay for a lower price.

If you can still access the drive, back up as much as you can NOW

Does it spin up at all ?

Is it seen by the BIOS ?

If its not seen by the BIOS i`m guessing the only way to recover the
data would be to get it done the expensive way - the electronics might
have keeled over and unless you have a like-for-like replacement made
within a couple of months of your existing drive you have pretty much no
chance.

If the drive is being "seen" but isn't spinning up, there are a couple
of kludgy methods you could use, but both are essentially where you have
no other option left...

a) connect the drive up externally and try "flicking" your wrist while
holding the drive - it might give a weak motor enough of a help to start
up

b) wrap it in an antistatic bag, and put it in the freezer for an hour -
plug it in asap and see if it goes :-}

If you can still see the drive in BIOS, but not Windows (or if Windows
sees it as a drive not properly formatted), recovery software may work.
You ought to look for the drive in Control Panel -> Administrator Tools
-> Storage Devices (I think that's what it's called, sorry can't check
now I'm running Linux). Often times manufacturers offer demo versions
of recovery software where if you can see the data, then you can pay to
use the program to recover it.

If the drive is seen by the BIOS but not in Windows, try booting off a
live Linux CD (like Knoppix). There's probably live distros dedicated
to data recovery, might be worth searching for one on distrowatch.org.
Anyways, once Linux boots, get to a terminal and (presuming it's IDE) run:
dmesg | grep hda
If that command returns a result, then Linux can see the drive; you
might want to run:
ls /mnt/
To see if the drive was automounted, and if it wasn't run:
mkdir /mnt/win
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win (assuming it's an older FAT32 drive,
if that fails, re-run the command with "ntfs" in place of "vfat")
If that works post again and I'll suggest commands to copy off the data.

If you can't see the drive in BIOS it's time to try the freezer trick
(see other posts), and if it works try the steps above.

If the freezer trick doesn't work you're pretty much out of luck, but
you might as well try giving the drive a firm smack towards the center
of it with your hand (I'm serious). Years ago I had an old SCSI drive
that wouldn't spin up, and this actually fixed it long enough to get my
data off it. On the plus side it's a great way to take out your
frustration.

Teranews was down. The drive shows in BIOS but not XP. I'll play with it
tonight and post back. TIA

Hi!

Sometimes a drive is just too far to gone to save. I purchased a
license/copy of Spinrite and wasn't sure it was the the right thing to do at
first.

Its first real test came when the IBM Deskstar in a Macintosh decided to
fail. The drive wasn't even readable. Spinrite didn't recover everything,
but the one file it couldn't save (a large inbox storage file) was on a
current backup tape.

The second real test came again in a different Macintosh--one with a Seagate
Barracuda ATA drive. This drive developed a bad spot and wouldn't let the
Mac OS start. All it would do is sit and click during the bootup process
before the machine locked up. When Spinrite was done, the drive worked
perfectly and all data was recovered. I promptly cloned the drive to a new
one.

If nothing else, I'd highly recommend a copy for testing newly installed
drives.

William

THe click of death is pretty fatal.

There are a couple of DIY techniques, none even remotely guarenteed.
There is an element of risk to all of these.

1) Freeze the drive to get it temporarily working. Copy data off as
fast as you can.

2) swap controller card. You need one from the EXACT model of hard
drive.
