John, Most Motherboards are set up so that the first thing that
happens when the CMOS battery goes down below a certain voltage is to
start losing the Time and Date. Some later boards will tell you the
Battery Voltage in Setup. It should be above about 2.5 volts. The next
thing that happens is that the CMOS will lose all data and your
computer will begin to have problems booting. You have about 30
minutes to change the battery as the CMOS will retain the data for
approximately that time running on the capacitors in the circuit. Get
a battery at RADIO Shack of the same number as the one in the
Computer. Your manual may give the number. It is usually a 3 volt,
lithium, CR2032. It's round about the size of a quarter and a little
thicker. Jim
