COMPAQ LTE 5400 - CD-ROM and FDD change

Hi again,

am I silly or what?
The Manual says that i am able to change this devices without
rebooting.
i just have to put the Laptop into standby-mode and then i insert the
new device and then i can continue working.
somehow this doesnt work. Anyone knows what i am doing wrong?
