Compaq SDX-420C write error

Recently I bought a Compaq SDX-420C AIT 35/70 GB IDE drive together with
some HP 35/70 GB tapes.

From day 1, the drive hasn't been able to do a full backup, it only writes a
part of the backup job and then tells the backup program (several different
programs tried) that it has encountered illegal data and then it stops.

The point at which the error shows is rather random... sometimes it writes
nearly 2 GB of data, sometimes only a few hundred MB's. Different tapes
tried as well, still no difference (all new HP tapes which should be
compatible with the Compaq drive).

I've updated the firmware, but no difference. The opsys makes no difference
either, the drive has been tested under both Windows 2003 server, Windows
2000 Pro and Red Hat Linux 8.0.

Anyone who have had similar problems? Any ideas?

Bruno, Denmark

Did this drive ever work with any other computer, or have you tried? Do so
if you can ...

Since it is recent it may be under warranty. You should call up HP and
hopefully they will give you a new one or repair it.

Hope that helps.
