Is CompUSA in Madison, WI stll open?

I paid with cc, so not as worried as I would be with cash. I don't
necessarily suspect foul play: store is closing after holiday
liquidation sale, so they are hard to get hold of. But I can see how my
order could fall through the cracks. So, if ready I'd like to pick up,
else cancel for refund or charge back at the bank. I can go there, but
it is 5 hr round trip, so just want to gather as much info as possible.

My understanding of the deal is that the founder of a large
Mexican telecom bought CompUSA a year or two ago to try to turn
it around. At that time, they closed about 1/2 of the existing
stores. A few days ago, the Mexican guy gave up. He "sold"
CompUSA to a liquidation company by transferring CompUSA and
a boat load of money to the liquidator. The liquidator will
close all stores shortly after the holiday season, liquidate
the merchandise and fixtures, and buy out all the leases.

A five hour round trip makes virtually any bargin expensive. I'd
cancel and order online. May cost a bit more up front, but no wasted
time, no wasted fuel, no hassels, just a product from a company that
(we hope) will be there in a week.

I live in Madison. I called their number, 608-827-9333, and tried
ext. 8 for a real person. After 3 tries, I was able to get a real
person at the store who said they might stay open until February. He
said they will begin the process of liquidating this week.

I also got a hold of a regular sales person at their 800 number who
said the store was open for now but will likely close in January.

I'd say keep trying by phone to check on your order status or to
cancel the order. Given you paid by credit card should provide some
level of protection.

There was a media announcement that the company was sold and the
remaining stores are closing after the holidays. That's different
than the earlier announcement about some of the stores closing. The
store in Milwaukee closed as part of the first round, but the Madison
store didn't. Here's the latest announcement:

The new owner of CompUSA does liquidations, but they also do recoveries.
They have indicted that the tech support and mail order businesses are

Thank you. I appreciate the info. I too finally got through to a live
person. He said the manager from 2 weeks ago no longer works there. He
took down my info. So, in a day or so, I should have it resolved,
either computer or refund.

The article that I saw in the New York Times was that they would be
closing the remaining 103 stores after the holidays.
