I'm just guessing, but what about a BIOS that has been mucked up somehow?
Or a motherboard going down the toilet? Unless you've somehow physically
damaged the battery holder it should be in perfect condition and stay that
way for ages. Batteries should last for years. Many years. A friend has a
system running Windows 3.1 no less, and has never changed the battery. I
have never changed a battery on any of the numerous systems I have owned
over the years.
