Hi all,

Just about to order a new HP All In One Laserjet which has 1 USB port and
one Ethernet port. I connect using my laptop to a company VPN and so when
this is connected I cannot access printers or shares on my local network as
the LAN card's IP is seen as one from the VPN DHCP server (Don't know why,
it just does). I do however wish to network the printer so family can use
it as well as me when I am not on VPN, but also need it for work documents.
To solve this can I connect the printer to my laptop via the USB port and
connect it to the router also to allow it to be used by the network? Will
it work OK?

Thanks

With most of the All-In-One printers, HPs or otherwise, the choice is either-or
but not both. And if you change the type of connection, you have to power
cycle the printer, in other words, reboot it... Ben Myers

I use a Laserjet 3390 just as you describe and it works fine. (Notebook on
VPN and using USB, other systems use Ethernet.)

Not that I will know the answer, but odds are no one else
will either, unless you specify the LJ model number and
SKU (the catalog number you actually order).

It used to be that low-end hp printers with multiple ports
would listen only to the first port that talked to them
after printer power-up, and ignore the others unless
power was cycled.

Those with plug-in JetDirect cards/modules could listen
on all ports.

Chances are the rules have changed, but without detailed
product ID, it's impossible to say. Also, it's certainly
worth asking hp. I got to an all-in-one pre-sales question
web form in a few obvious clicks from the hp front page.

<snip>

Thanks for the replies guys, I've had to delay ordering (which is just as
well so I can confirm as to whether or not it will work. The Printer is:

HP Color LaserJet 2840 All-in-One (Q3950A)

Costing over £500 I would hope it can connect via both.

Thanks :-)
