Crossover. It is twisted pair too (or at least should be).
The other may be (probably is), a straight through.

First of, are the Link indicators lit on each NIC? If so your
phyisical network is good.
Second, you need the drivers installed for the nic in each PC.
Third, you need to configure a protocol and a client
Use the same protocol (I use IPX). Set the Identifications so they are
in the same workgroup.
Use Cleint for Microsoft Networks
Set it so you log with networking password.
