Hi all. Just recently tried to upgrade from ME to XP. After numerous
attempts (the cd work get about halfway downloaded, then reboot), I finally
put in an old cd drive I had laying around. I ended up getting the full
installation instead of upgrade, and everything went well. I installed the
new Dvd burner, all went well. I installed numerous programs, all went
well. I then hooked the original Cd drive that came with the computer, all
went wrong. Now it takes about 5 mins to boot up, then I get a "operating
system not found" message. Doesn't matter if I hit F1, regular boot, or
have the XP cd in, it still takes about 5 mins. With the Cd in, it just
freezes. It lets me finally reach the bios, and everything shows up. I've
put new cables in and have tried all the various types of combinations
possible, and still the same thing every time. I've switched the jumpers
and everything, still no luck. I've tried each HD individually too. It is a
HP Pavilion 8756c (3 yrs. old). I have: 128 ram; a 27gig HD that had the
operating system on; 120gig HD for storage; a brand new Dvd burner; and a cd
drive. My Bios recognizes everything. I just can't figure out why it
worked fine (eventually) then the second I hooked up the cd drive, all went
wrong. I'm sorry for such the long request, but I figured the more you
knew, the better the odds of helping me. I greatly appreciate any and all
help in explaining or pointing me in the general direction. Once again,
thanks so much.

Hi,

In article <Q0VNb.70040$5V2.74050@attbi_s53>, paul <> wrote:

You said it didn't work with the original CD drive. It worked when you
removed it. It stopped working when you put it back in. Sounds like a
bad CD drive, or one incompatible with XP.

You might have conflicting Master/Slave jumpered IDE drives. You might
have a cable-select cable mixed with drive select jumpers. You might
have a bad old CD drive.

Take a look at CD drives at newegg.com . 52x Read-only CD's cost $13
new. Writables are about $30. You already have a DVD drive. Wasting a
lot of time on this problem might not be worth it.

Ken.
