Hi,

I may need to replace my Athlon 64 3500+ Newcastle. I bought this
processor 2 years ago and have since seen the same processor with
different names on sale: Venice, Winchester, Clawhammer. I'm wondering
which of these would be a compatible replacement on an A8V Delux (rev
2.0) motherboard.

Thanks.

The 3500 Venice is that latest in that series. However, be sure to specify
the E6 stepping not the older E3. The Venice and Winchester cores are 90um
whereas the Newcastle and Clawhammer 3500s are the older 130um. The Venice
will run slightly faster than the others although the difference is really
only detectable on benchmarks. It does have a significantly improved memory
controller though.

Dear RNurse,

Here are the processors your motherboard supports. Note: you may need
to upgrade the BIOS, and, in fact, you probably will.

http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...l=A8V%20Deluxe

3500 Venice:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 2.2GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor

*$91.00*

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103603

I have one of these 3700 with 1MB of L2 cache, smooth as silk:

Note: I paid a lot more than $99.00......

*Dual core:*

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2.0GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939
Dual Core Processor - *$152.00*

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103562

For $187, you get essentially two 3500's on one CPU die: the 3500 has a
2.2ghz clock speed. The X2 4200 is two of these in one dual core CPU:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2.2GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor
Model ADA4200BVBOX - Retail
