CUV4X-E - processor overheating or a bad sensor?

Hi all,

I recently replaced bad a motherboard on an older system with an ASUS
CUV4X-E (no audio) motherboard. Everything works great except that the
board would constantly beep when the system is running - warning that
the processor (Celeron 1.0 GHz) was overheating. I checked the BIOS and
indeed the processor temperature was a bit high reported at 75-79
celcius.

The processor is in place fine and the heatsink is firmly attached and
locked in. The processor fan likewise is working fine. I even felt both
the heatsink and the processor - not at all hot - only a little warm.

I've installed XP on the system and havn't run into problems such as
crashing and forced rebooting which I'm told are usually assosciated
with an overheating processor.

Any ideas? Is the processor actually overheating or is the motherboard
sensor messing up?

thanks,
Ed

It would not hurt to remove the HSF, clean off all of the old
thermal compound from both the HSF and the heat-slug on the CPU,
re-apply Arctic Silver in the prescribed manner and re-attach the
HSF. Also, with the HSF detached, clear the fins of the heatsink
with compressed air.

Both are possible scenarios. The temp, though, is in a range where it in fact
could be correct. A bad sensor would give all kinds of temps, why not 200C?
