I had a similar problem. In my case, my machine had garbeled screen
after I booted up. WIN2K would not have problems booting in safe mode,
however if the display driver is enabled it would not boot. I thought
it was a corrupt driver and tried reinstalling the latest version, but
would not help. So I reinstalled W2K and still had the same problem.
I spoke with Intel technical support and they said that they are
lately receiving a lot of calls on the boards based on this chipset
and could be because of a faulty 82845 chip. They have asked me to
send the board, so that they could send me a replacement.
Sorry, I could not help you fix the problem but atleast the above
information may help you get a warranty replacement.
