Hi,

I have a 2.5 year old Inpiron 600m. It was perfectly fine this afternoon.

When I tried turning it on just not, all I get is the caps lock/num
lock/scroll lock LEDS blinking very quickly (more like shimmering) while
power LED is on. It then switches off within a couple of seconds.

The screen never turns on, the HDD never starts spinning up.

This happens whether the battery is in/out the AC power cable is in out.

Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened?

couple of things to try would be to reseat the memory and your video card.
It could also be a hard drive.

There are a couple of things to try. Try booting up by pressing the
<Fn> function key on the bottom left of the keyboard and the power
button at the same time. This will run PSA diagnostics on your system.
If this fails, call Dell at 800-624-9896. They can diagnose it further
and give you options

My 600M was dying after about the same time. Symptoms were the power button
being unresponsive & taking several presses to power on with the LED's
nearby being lit when they shouldn't be. When it finally died I was able to
boot, but the screen gets garble shortly afterwards & shuts down. I was
within my 3 year warranty at the time so I sent it in & Dell replaced the
mobo & updated the bios. It worked fine for a few months after that, but now
I'm experiencing the same symptoms again. So I believe that there is some
defect in the design causing the motherboards in these 600m's to fail
prematurely. Of course I'm out of warranty now too so it's not really worth
it to get this fixed.

This was my second Dell notebook & they both had issues so I think I'm done
with them. A shame since they have many good features for the price, but the
quality control is lacking at least in the Inpiron line

That's interesting, because the 600m was the first Pentium-M Inspiron,
and also the last (in the Inspiron line) of that "build type" (color,
modular bay, etc). Maybe there were quality problems with a set of
components, but if it were the basic design more would have been heard
of it.

I think the Latitude line shared commonalities too (at least with the
modular bay and other components).

I don't think I'd draw conclusions like this since my daughter has one
and it works fine on a daily basis. The only thing it needed replaced
was the battery. My only gripe with it is, it is a bit on the heavy
side.

Mine is out of warranty, so I tried taking it to a local repair shop. When
I took it out to show it to them, it actually worked, and continues to do
so right now [crosses-fingers].

I have to say that the volume/on button strip started failing on the laptop
about a year ago, and right now needs a lot of force to be operated. I
fully expect this to fail at some point, and will then have a fully-
operational laptop save for the power button, so no way to use it...

Well, it's all ok for now. Thanks for the replies.
